Anyone have fun garage sale stories? I participated in my first today. The street connecting to mine did a block sale, and I got some neighbors to join in. I'm beat. I also realize my successful day is barely grocery money. Haha. At least the literal garage is getting emptied.

I love rummage-sale-ing but have noticed over the years that many sellers have almost made it a profession and it has taken a lot of the fun out of it.
This is from my buyers perspective.

My favorite story of the day was selling my surround sound. I thought I was coming in low at $35. The guy starts asking questions, and I can tell he's really interested.
Guy: How much?
Drop In: $35 Firm.
Guy: $25
Drop In: $35
Guy: $30
Drop In: $35
Guy: Can you break a hundred?
Drop In: No
Guy: Here's forty.
Drop In: I'll help put it in your car. Byeeeee.

My fun garage sale story is you can come to my garage and take what you want for free. Please! I have lots of stuff I can't put on the moving van -- live plants (anybody want some big plants?) chemicals (every household chemical and fertilizer) home made compost, wood, more wood.. And winter stuff I won't use any more...snow shovels, salt,. And stuff like a weight lifting machine and weights. So I am putting it out for whoever wants it. I will even throw in beer if you take something. Cause next weekend I will have to pay to haul it all away.

When we moved I wish we brought nothing. Ended up replacing couches and buying new kids beds anyway. We hauled this stupid treadmill for some reason and all kinds of kids toys they don't even play with anymore. Basically sell everything you can. Even for pennies on the dollar as it isn't worth the hassle when moving.

i also have a 1900s era water pump that was the original water well pump from the basement of this 100 year old home. After who know how many owners, it's time for that to go. Probably worth something to a collector.

Without having ever owned one I would have to say a treadmill is one of the worst things to own. Its huge, destroys the decor of any room its in and is either really expensive or a cheap rickety piece of crap......that you are never fixing if it breaks. The pavement has never let me down and takes up no space.

generally agree. it iis useful in winter, but where i am going, there isn't much winter. I had athletes in the family. they used it a lot. The girls preferred it to dark streets.

Day two is done. Sold my workbench and made new friends. New married couple down the street purchased it, and I helped the dude carry the monstrosity down the block to the garage. When we were done, his wife was handing me a 312. I'm going to like these people.

Offer stands.
I put out a big bin of my 6 kids worth of sports toys...baseballs, softballs, soccer balls, golf clubs, tennis rackets, balls, baseball gloves, whiffle ball bats, etc. The kids on the block took all of it. I love that the kids on this block are always playing sports outside. Reminds me of my yute. They didn't get beer tho. The metal scroungers that drive up the alleys all weekend took about 600 pounds of steel with the weight machine and weights. Im tired from carrying it all out. They probably had a good $day

My dad wanted to sell them, but I'm waiting to give them to a group of neighborhood kids. One, I want to give back like you're saying. Also, it doesn't hurt to develop goodwill so my house is the last to be violated by rascals.

Tomorrow I will put out a family pack of roller blades. The kids will probably take them too, but their parents might have another opinion. My pair of blades are especially good at finding bushes to run into.

So I hear through one of the neighbor kids that some parents (maybe his) don't like that I'm doing my garage give away. Too trashy for them apparently. F em. Jeez...I don't say anything when her dog tramples my flowers or shits on my deck. FU North Shore bitches. I'll hoist the middle finger to ya as I get the F out of here in 18 days.

I'm kind of pissed I wasn't in the chicagoland area....I would have taken the weights minus the equipment off your hands.

I couldn't even begin to understand that thinking, and I have a special way of making people like that feel even worse about themselves. I learned a valuable lesson about twenty years ago. If the other person is the asshole, don't let them win.

The only way I could see someone being pissed is if their kids went to the sale alone and brought home a shit ton of stuff they didn't want to store at the house. I brought shit ton of beer signs with one of my friends when we went to a garage sale when we were 10 or so. Pretty sure my mom returned all of it to the guy. It was a haul though...she should have put it in the attic for future use.

Anything left over put in a box in their yard with a sign that says "their kids name" asked for it. Bunch of prissy pricks.

you want em? My wife just pitched hers. You want my 70s era Joe Cocker, Allman Brothers, Stones and Dead collection? ok. You can have it. I have been thinking they are worth something, but I wont ever do it.
Many a doobie was rolled on those albums until I learned to roll freehand. Who knows, you might find a fossilized joint from 75 in there somewhere. You get the 70s California milk crate they have been in for 40 years too.
