I don't think so. Just that the notion this wasn't race/religion related is absurd. As absurd as comparing a school to an airport and what you can bring to each. I hope kesha can survive you branding him as absurd.

Whats absurd is that he isn't enjoying a finely crafted Oktoberfest beer at this very moment.

Probably shouldn't go in the "Texas WTF?" thread then.
Those kids getting suspended is stupid as well, as long as there isn't a dress code in the school.
They weren't arrested were they?

It sounded like there was no formal dress code...just a recent ban on the stars and bars being on them or their vehicles on school property. It just sounds like a good ol pissing match.
No one needed to be arrested anywhere. After seeing multiple stories with COMPLETELY different takes on that incident the other day........that didn't need to go beyond the school office. Any initial concern could have and should have been dispelled in the school. The steps they took beyond concern were way over the top and unneccesary.

Bad fire here in our county that started Tuesday. Thousands of acres burned, 400 families evacuated. Fire only 25% contained. The spirit of pitching in here is infectous. Besides giving $, we are going to take in a few dogs temporarily while their owners are in shelters. I have been in other places when disasters happened, but I've never seen the spirit of helping like I am seeing here.
Also doing wildfire prep around the homestead tomorrow.

Not sure if that is supposed to be installing sprinklers or building a moat. I have sprinklers all around the house but doubt they will be that effective if all the trees are ablaze. With my house surrounded by 100 trees that are 100 feet tall, a moat won't do much to stop the wind from sending burning embers to my roof. There are stories of people whose houses were 1/4 mile or more from the blaze that caught on fire when a burning ember hit their roof.
Maybe I need an army of Packer fans on my roof with hoses. I say Packer fans because they are especially good at blowing hot air. That would maybe keep the flames back. And if they fail, we could at least eat melted cheese sandwiches while the house burns.
In the meantime, I'm doing more conventional wildfire prep. No brush of any kind within 50 feet of the house. Hoses at every faucet, water pump with a hose by the pool standing ready. Cleaning leaves out of the gutter (apparently burning embers on roofs with leaves in the gutter is another fire starter). And organizing all my buckets, barrels, wheel barrels and stuff to carry water to the front.
I hope of course all this is just wasted time and energy. I'm willing to waste a day if it could save us from possible destruction.
We have had 5 minutes of rain since I moved here July 1. Temps have been in the 90s and 100s every day since. It's a tinderbox out there....

Moat.
I imagine sprinklers wouldn't be very effective.
Is Austin normally dry. Would using clay roofing like in AZ have any impact on reducing houses catching on fire?

Austin has been in a drought for several years that was only temporarily alleviated by the May rains. The Earth's climate is so wacky, who knows what is normal any more. Clay roofs make a lot of sense to me. They are not common here, but there are some Spanish-style/stucco homes that have them. I am sure going to look at it.

There has been a burn ban in effect for a few months and there are a few rubes driving around with "Ban the Burn Ban" bumper stickers. The land is kindling, the county is on fire, hundreds of people are losing everything they own and these jobs are driving around a smokey town advocating their "freedom" to start fires.

Fiiiiiire...Meeeeeeerica....Fiiiiiiiire.
How about one of those fancy new metal roofs that are all the rage? They make some really cool ones now that almost look like ceramic tiles.

Hope it works out Coast. It sounds like you're hanging with Max Prepare. By the way, I've always thought a moat would be an outstanding idea. This could be an excuse to build one. I just want to toss people soliciting for Comcast in. You have another reason, even if it isn't the best defense.

Yes Kesha, metal roofs are widely used here. I have them on the two other structures. Definitely worth considering.
Who has some dynamite to help me build the moat. I dug a hole today to plant a bush. I got down maybe a foot and a half and could not break through the clay with a sharp shovel. I filled the hole with water to try to soften the clay so I could cut down another 6 inches. 2 hours later, there is still a foot of water in the hole. The ground on top is dry and underneath, t's concrete. Gardening is a bit more of a challenge here.

This reminds me of the time that MacGyver was down in South America studying the ecology of the Rio de Maricon and he ended up on Trumbo's ranch. Trumbo was fearing for his life as the fire ants were invading the countryside and nothing could stop them. Mac helped Trumbo build a moat around the ranch but the ants just used leaves as little rafts to cross the water. The moat failed. They then used fire but it was to no avail. Eventually MacGyver convinced Trumbo that the only way to save the ranch and their lives was to blow the dam on the river and destroy all the crops and irrigation system but save the ranch. Trumbo agreed and they saved the ranch. The lesson here.....get some explosives and blow up the nearest dam.

Just saw an ad from the local grocery for "Armadillo Eggs".
Chicken stuffed in a Jalopeno, wrapped in bacon and fried. Whose in?

Oct. 18 and the weather (heat) has finally broken. And golf season begins. It has been too hot to play but with temps a balmy 82, it's time to get to the links.

No rain to speak of for 4 months, a wildfire burned for a week and now shit is about to get real. Heavy rains to start tonight or the morning and expected to rain for 4 days. Ground is so dry and clay so impermeable, floods are expected.
