We will have a contest here throughout the football season to pick winners against the spread. You will need to make at least 50 plays during the season from any combination of college and NFL. Most plays will be for 1 unit at a standard risk 1.1 to win 1. You can make up to 10 plays worth 2 units, and up to 2 plays worth 3 units. The winner will be the person with the most units on January 19..after the NFL Conference championships.
I will post the lines on select games every week and will update them during the week. This way everyone will be making their bets at mostly current numbers, just as if they were in Vegas. I will post results snd standings every week.
1st prize will be $200. 2nd prize is $100.
I am happy to provide these prizes because I expect to get more than $300 worth of entertainment from this. I am not eligible to win.
Lines for the first week will be posted here next Tuesday and every Tuesday. People can begin any time they like but to win, you must make at least 50 bets by Jan. 18.
Good Luck!!

Beat The Book Lines Week 0 Here are the lines for this first week of the contest. The lines are from Bookmaker -- "where the line originates". The spread is shown alongside the favorite, the total is shown alongside the underdog.
I will update these lines periodically through the week. You may make plays at any time before a game kicks off, but you will be locked into the most recent lines shown when you post. If you post a play after a game starts, the play will be disallowed. Good luck.

Ok, let me give this a shot to see if I'm doing it right. First, I wasn't sure if I'm supposed to use the numbers provided above or find a current line. I'm under the impression I need a current line. Soooo, if that's the case, then I found this: www.betonline.ag/sportsbook and if that place is even legit, then that's what I'm going with. So if all the above is correct, then my picks so far are: Temple +13 1/2 Auburn -19 Massachusetts +17 * Temple may have sucked last year but it wasn't as bad as you think it was. Vandy will have an awfully hard time keeping up in the scoring department with temple's P.J. "Dynamite" Walker. Temple may win outright. * Not buying the Arkansas love AT ALL. Plus it's important to be able to rib on Hawger on a weekly basis. I'd take Auburn at -49 if I had to. * I stole the Massachusetts bet from a supposed smart handicapper guy not named Mike North. Hmmmmm, let me go check another place too, now that I think about it.

Well shoot, I really suck at this. Ok, well dadgummit, if I'm supposed to use Coast's lines, then: Temple +14 (Even more of a steal ) UMass +17 (Unchanged so blow me Speeps) But I will hold off on Auburn until I get a more favorable number due to all you whack jobs giving Arkansas so much love.

Ah damn, Chus will make this tougher than just picking against Arkansas and Michigan Can you give me a little lowdown on Braxton Miller's backup? I find it hard to believe that either: A. THEE OSU won't absolutely crush them B. The over will be achieved C. Both scenarios play out

He's Urban's guy. I think he'll be more than fine. Miller is a good runner but still not an excellent passer. Sort of like Pryor. Last year fill-in when Miller got injured Guyton did well as he was a better passer. The new cat is primarily a runner. Though, the o-line is new (Linsley!) So, eh, take the over. Last year Ohio State supposedly was going to have a sick defense and they started slow. They lost some real good starters to the draft (Roby, Shazier)
i feel more comfortable playing the over than picking the Scarlet and Gray.

Kirkwood likes over and I am on under. I never like it when I am opposite a homer who knows his team.

More questions for Coast (or nosy Speeps)
1. Is there a limit to # of picks each week. Or for the season. (I saw the minimum requirement) 2. How many picks does a normal person make each week?
|
|
|
Post by Coast2Coast on Aug 26, 2014 23:39:56 GMT -6
There is no limit to how many picks. The winner is # of units earned, so if a person can hit a winning % above 52.4% (breakeven with 11/10), they should make as many as possible. Because let's say a guy goes 3-0 and another guy goes 20-15...the guy who went 20-15 will be ahead.
How many a week? Totally an individual thing. I know guys who make a few every week and guys who make 50. If you feel strongly about some more than others, then just go with your best.

All for 1 unit:
Arkansas +20.5
Oklahoma St. +17.5
W. Michigan +10
Georgia -7.5
Good luck to all, even Kirkwood.

I really don't understand how to do this at all. I do see Hawg knows what I'm talking about in regards to the Broncos of Western Michigan though.
