And that is why the wrestling business, at least in North America, is in the shape it's in.
Things that make sense and help set things up long term are ignored for instant pops.

This week’s WWE RAW viewership was down 6%. The final number was 3.797 million, down from last week’s 4.040 million.
This week saw the lowest viewership since May 26th, and was the third lowest draw of 2014. Not a single hour passed 4 million fans tuning in, but the silver lining is that the numbers increased slowly throughout the night, with hours of 3.577M, 3.891M, and 3.924M.
But..but...but...The Rock...

UPDATE: PW.net reports that last night’s Raw drew a 2.63 household rating, down 7% from last week’s 2.83. Again, this number is the lowest this year, beating out the May 26th episode’s 2.64 to make the new nadir. ORIGINAL: Last night’s episode of WWE Raw may have been Rock-tastic, but it wasn’t ratings-tastic. The show drew 3.80 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the all-important 18 – 49 demographic. While the viewership was down 6%, the demo rating was the real fall. It fell 16% from last week’s 1.43 demo rating and is the lowest demo rating of the year, beating out the 1.23 demo rating that the May 26th episode did. By comparison, the same week last year scored a 1.37 demo rating. Obviously, the Rock’s appearance shouldn’t be counted as a negative factor here. There was no way for them to get a bump from his name as he wasn’t advertised or promoted during the show. Raw is now up against a very crowded TV lineup as well with Gotham, The Voice, The Blacklist, The Big Bang Theory, Monday Night Football and more competing for eyeballs. The show’s hourly numbers are as follows: 8 PM: 3.58 million viewers (1.1 demo rating) 9 PM: 3.89 million viewers (1.2 demo rating) 10 PM: 3.92 million viewers (1.3 demo rating) The household rating will be available later.
