– Eric Van Wagenen, who is a producer on Lucha Underground, appeared on this week’s Wrestling Compadres podcast. Check out the video below as well as some highlights: On a second season of the show: “I can tell you with almost full certainty that it is going to happen. The when and the where is all dependent on our ability to raise enough money to keep the production standards the same. We are all very committed to keeping Lucha Underground the best looking, most innovative and most creative wrestling product out there. Sometimes it comes at a price. Vignettes, editing, they’re not cheap. El Rey is a great network to work with, they just can’t justify spending the kind of money that you would get form much bigger cable channel.” On getting more money for the series: We are looking for alternative ways to raise money, whether that’s a secondary broadcast network, steaming services. We know there’s a #NetflixNeedsLucha hashtag going around that’s gaining traction. We are looking at all of our options and that will determine the when and the where. There is talk of moving to a cheaper location. If I were to guess, I would say we would be back on the air by January…Everybody who is involved in the show is committed to keeping it on the air, but we are committed to keeping THIS show on the air. We don’t want to dumb it down, we don’t want to cheapen it. We have a great creative team in place, we want to keep everybody doing exactly what it is we’ve done in season 1, so we’re just working out the details.” podcastone.com/f/wrestling-compadres

Finally got around to watching this.
That Vampiro-Pentagon Jr. thing was a train wreck.

For me I think despite the match being incredibly sloppy, the ending made up for it. I legit didn't see it coming, which is rare.
Puma vs Muertes was fun, but like I've said beföre, I've just never been a Mil Muertes (Mesias, Ricky Bandares, whatevever you wanna call him) fan. So him ending the season as World Champ just left me bummed.
That Catarina sure is delightful though. Makes me miss the weird NXT love triangle between her EC3 & Fandango.

Agreed. The ending of the Vampiro-Pentagon match made up for the match.
I liked the end of the show. It was different.
Hopefully season 2 does happen in Texas.

This is why you won't find a solid competitor to WWE unless it's a Ted Turner type. Look, Lucha was a nice little show. Different. But it cost just under sixteen million last year?!?!?!?!?! Sixteen million dollars?!?!?!?! Sixteen million for Lucha Underground? WTF.
- As PWMania.com reported, Lucha Underground will return for a second season on the El Rey Network in early 2016. They will be back at The Temple in Los Angeles for filming. Production is expected to start back up in December with pre-production being done some time before December as some characters will be brought in for promo work and vignettes.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that the budget for each Lucha Underground episode will be decreased from last season’s $400,000 per episode but the changes made due to the budget cut won’t be noticeable. There was some talk of moving the tapings to either Texas or Mexico due to costs but they’re staying in Los Angeles. It was also said that they will not be taping as many episodes for this season as they did for the first season, which had 39.
There have been rumors of a Lucha Underground TV deal being worked out in Mexico as officials had been in talks with Telavisa Channel 5. If they were to come to a deal, that would give Lucha Underground financial assistance for this season plus they would have a lot more exposure in Mexico than WWE, AAA or CMLL.

They produced it like a tv show. Which was different and that's why it initially caught on. Because of the tremendous production values.
Now that you have people invested in the characters and storylines, it makes sense to scale back.

Lucha Underground
Lucha Underground Executive Producer Eric Van Wagenen recently spoke with The Richest, and talked a bit about the direction for season two of the show.
He said the new season will incorporate more science fiction and supernatural elements into the show, something that was hinted at in the premiere season. He said the show started as a familiar wrestling show, and once they started seeing a positive response they now can continue to add new elements that are less reality based. Van Wagenen had the following to say:
“So, I think we’ll continue to push things. I think we thought that we would be more traditional still at the end of the season one, but that was where we started doing things like having Drago turning into a fire breathing dragon, and Mil Muertes being resurrected, and killing Bael- doing these kinds of crazy things. Once we saw that the audience had an appetite for it than we kind of stepped on the gas.”

Regardless, I'm just happy she'll be on next season.

I won't spoil results or anything for the show like I do in my NXT reviews, but I was excited to talk about this because this is the first time I ever got to see Lucha Underground in ENGLISH as I just finished the season premiere.
The Vampiro opener was insane, but really well produced. Matt Striker is weird/hilarious as the super serious guy picking Vampiro up from the asylum.
King Cuerno vs Fenix was a strong opener, very fast paced & I liked the finish. Fenix is absolutely ridiculous, he's awesome.
Son of Havoc vs Ivelisse vs Angelico was a nice little match with Ivelisse being easily the most over. She held her own & I like that these three are still a group. Sort of like it's more chaotic with Catarina & Mil Muertes in charge now.
Ivelisse vs Mil Muertes was actually pretty good. She got in some shots & some nice near falls, but Muertes destroyed her aside from that.
I really liked the show, especially when I can sort of understand Striker's rambling, haha. I haven't read any spoilers, so I'm looking forward to what's to come.

KS hates Lucha. Go read Cornette's rant, its basically word for word what he told me the other day.
I love the style, the way it separates itself from the “wrestling world” is a breath of fresh air. Cornette thinks it's taking the legitimacy out of wrestling, and I'll argue all day that to the public eye there is no legitimacy. Who cares anyways? Its super entertaining, not a kids show, and keeps you invested. I just got the full first season on a flash drive, if there was a DVD of it I would have bought it.
Lucha Underground shouldn't replace your favorite wrestling show (ROH, NXT, NJPW, I guess Raw) but it compliments them perfectly. I really want LU to go to Netflix. I feel like they would gain a big audience from that.

Rick Knox with arguably the worst ref bump ever in the Mundo/Killshot match. Striker was unbearable on commentary. I liked the interaction with Mundo & Cage afterwards. Brian Cage is so jacked it's borderline awkward.
Hard to believe Marty the Moth was on the Stone Cold season of Tough Enough, he's creepy as hell, I love his gimmick.
Nice little video package for Justin Gabriel. Very good back & forth match with him & Willie Mack, who is so fucking good.
Catrina's boys vs Puma & Pentagon was a good main event as it played well off the differences between Puma & Pentagon, but they teamed well together, despite not being on the same page. Post match where Pentagon almost breaks the arm of Puma like he did Muertes was good storytelling too.
I LOVE that I get this in English now. This & NXT are the best wrestling each week. Also dug the post-credit scene with Mysterio too.

I LOVE that I get this in English now. This & NXT are the best wrestling each week. Also dug the post-credit scene with Mysterio too. I spend $138/month for cable and internet. I don't have NXT, Lucha, TNA, or ROH on my television. I know I just need to get a Chromecast for NXT. But still........

Awesome show this week, but anyone who watched it & might've missed the end, the teaser was pretty damn cool with the introduction of Joey Ryan & his pairing with Cortez Castro (Ricky Reyes).
Plus Drago/Jack Evans was good & the Last Luchador Standing match with King Cuerno/Fenix was excellent.

- Lucha Underground will have to raise funds or sign deals to bring in money for their fourth season. They reportedly have enough money for the third season tapings through mid-May and are planning on having all TV taped through summer 2017 after those tapings are over. Lucha officials are also trying to get a movie produced for 2018. In regards to the company losing money, a source noted to The Wrestling Observer that after two seasons, the company has lost slightly less than half of what TNA lost after 10 years in business.

This is super smart for a new generation of wrestling fans. When I heard they were actually doing seasons of the show I got this excited feeling that maybe, finally, a wrestling promotion gets on Netflix. I still feel like it would be a huge thing if say ROH landed on Neftlix, since most of us have Netflix instead of cable.
Is this Netflix? No, but its close enough for me to like it. How impossible is it to get someone new into wrestling? Where do they start, how do you just thrust someone right into the world of Raw or ROH? Well with Lucha dropping season 1 and 2 on I Tunes is awesome. I'll gladly drop 45 bucks on season 1 in HD, and now can watch every show in their history. Its also super easy to get someone into it now, because you can follow the show from the start. Lucha's style is perfect for this, since they shoot everything like a TV show anyways.
They might be losing money, their future may be unknown, but the most unconventional and new age wrestling product out there just continued the trend. Hell if ROH had season DvD's I'd get those too.

This is awesome. I don't like Lucha as much as others, but it's good for the business.
Soon you will be able to ‘Netflix and Chill’ with Lucha Underground, according to the Wrestling Observer Newletter.
The creators of Lucha Underground a very close to striking a deal with Netflix to carry the show’s first season. The agreement would bring the show a much-needed additional revenue stream and would potentially expose the product to millions of new viewers.
Speaking of Lucha Underground, season 3 will begin shooting later this month in Boyle Heights, California.
