I didn't even see the Escape the Fate reference earlier!!! They rock but I liked them with Ronnie as the singer. His new band Falling in Reverse is pretty solid but not the same. They are very hair band-esque.
I also like Black Veil Brides quite a bit.

Fuck it. We are doing things different - why? Because fucking metal that's why. We are going to start with number 1 and work our way down. Buckle up because this is not for the squeamish or faint hearted. You don't like it then fuck you. </img> 1. SLAYERI think it is obvious who not only the greatest metal band in the world is, but also the best fucking band ever. Like Michael Jordan is to basketball, Slayer is to music. Neither of them give a fuck about the competition, dominate, and are always leagues better than any of their peers. Oh and did I mention DOMINATE!! Their technical prowess is second to none, their song creativity is unparallelled, and their subject matter is always pushing boundaries. Some of the most iconic riffs in metal history have come from Jeff Hanneman (Rest In Power brother) and the greatest drummer of all time Dave Lombardo spent most of his career with them. Even the current lineup with Gary Holt filling in for Hanneman and Paul Bostaph for Lombardo (for the second time but that is its own thread probably) is just pure metal awesomeness. For over 30 years Slayer has been the best in the world and will stay that way until they decide to hang it up. In 1983 a group of 17 year olds burst onto the Bay Area music scene with this song called The AntiChrist from their first album Show No Mercy. Their second album Hell Awaits had a song of the same name and became renown after opening for their live double disc Decade of Aggression. Obviously this was recorded much later in their career but these are the two songs that started it. Now contrary to what ignorant and uneducated people will tell you, Slayer is not satanic. However anti-religion and anti-establishment are common themes among their music. Challenging status quo is a staple of what makes Slayer Slayer. Hell Awaits/The AntiChristSlayer dropped their 3rd studio album Reign in Blood in 1986 and is still regarded as the greatest thrash metal album of all time. Not really any room for debate about it either. 10 songs in 29 min. Blistering and breakneck speed anchored by two of their iconic songs. First Angel of Death - about the Nazi war atrocities with human experimentation during WWII. It includes the legendary "scream" from Tom Araya, the signature duel lead guitar solos (starting at 3:38) and also a 4 second drum solo (4:24 mark) that has to be heard to be believed. This was the new standard. Angel of DeathThe other bookend of this album is probably the most well known Slayer song - Raining Blood. Its haunting opening that melts into the legendary riff and carries you through to the pounding drums herding you down to the auditory onslaught. Raining BloodSlayer's next studio album was South of Heaven and didn't receive the same praise as its predecessor but still a solid set top to bottom. This is the title track and again has a legendary riff that won't leave you once you hear it. It also uses the word "cunting" as a verb so... South of HeavenTheir next album Seasons in the Abyss was back in the graces of critics and up in the pantheon of greatness with Reign in Blood. Every song strong on its own but together as an album truly fantastic. Including some staples such as War Ensemble, Spirit in Black, Dead Skin Mask (about infamous Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein), my personal favorite Skeletons of Society (about nuclear fallout) and again closing out with the title track Seasons in the Abyss. Another chilling opening that slowly lures you into it, letting your ears pick up nuances and cues to continue down its path until it grabs you with its pounding rythym and doesn't let go. And again a late song solo by Hanneman that just exemplifies what an incredible musician he was. A masterpiece. Seasons In the AbyssBonus video - War Ensemble www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpMuCrbxE8ABonus video - Skeletons of Society www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSZ-0Mr30mUBonus video - Dead Skin Mask www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEfIGtTvBeQThat was just Part 1. We still have half their discography and career to cover.

Ok this will be 3 parts Just too much awesome to contain or be restrained by posts!!! After Seasons in the Abyss, there was internal strife within the band. Drummer Dave Lombardo and guitarist Kerry King were on opposite sides of a money dispute and Lombardo left. The band brought in Paul Bostaph to fill in and he ended up being with the band for almost a decade. A tremendous drummer in his own right he brought new energy behind the kit. The next album released was Divine Intervention and dealt with realism - serial killers (Dahmer) and governmental power and the media are some examples. The album was also banned in Germany due to lyrical content in several songs - mainly SS-3. This is my favorite song on the album MindControl - CAUTION INTENSE!!! Honestly not for the squeamish. You have been warned. Next came a unique album for Slayer. It consists of punk cover songs and only 1 Slayer song. Gemini Next is my favorite Slayer album - Diabolus in Musica, translated as the Devils Music or the tritone. This was everything not "nu-metal" which was the scene in the late 90's. It was glorious. I love every single track on this album and it would be in the running for only thing I could ever listen to for the rest of my life. Tom Araya's vocals are perfect and really a highlight to the album. I am just linking the whole goddamn thing but I encourage you to specifically listen to Death's Head, Stain of Mind, and Perversions of Pain. Top to bottom just a masterpiece. EDIT: Watching in line won't let you jump to tracks use direct link www.youtube.com/watch?v=c23ttMF8ZAUDiablous In Musica In my mind following Diabolus was going to be impossible, but they did it. Their next album was God Hates Us All and it had the typical breakneck thrash metal that only Slayer can deliver. Two tracks really stand out - Disciple and Bloodline. The first is where the namesake of the album cam from and it isn't about anti-Christianity as much as the everyday guy that has shit happen to him and wonders why God hates him. It was also nominated for a Grammy. The second was on the soundtrack to Dracula 2000 and probably their most commercial/radio playable song at the time. Disciple Bloodline I will finish up later tonight or tomorrow.

Getting past God Hates Us All takes us to 2006 when Slayer released Christ Illusion. This is my least favorite album, but that doesn't mean it is bad. Not at all. Plenty of signature Slayer riffs and anti-establishment themes, but no song really stood out and resonated with me. There was quite a bit of controversy around one song on the album - Jihad. Hanneman wrote about the 9/11 attacks from the perspective of a terrorist and their belief system. Again pushing boundaries and buttons are hallmarks of Slayer and their response to critics was a resounding Fuck You. Being challenged and looking at things through a different lens to get another perspective is a good thing, regardless of what ignorant people may say otherwise. I would say my favorite song on the album is Cult - again anti-religion and how no matter what it is called, its a cult. Or maybe Final Six which was a bonus track. Really haunting guitar and some powerful writing by Hanneman. Cult Final Six
Now we get to World Painted Blood. The last album with Lombardo as drummer (for now at least) and Hanneman as guitarist (RIP). This album is stacked with power thrash metal and I love it. The title track once again was nominated for a Grammy showing that mainstream music media finally realized this band was still at the top of their game and producing the best metal out there. It's also one of those albums that the more you listen to it the more you pick up, lots of nuances and technical transitions that are just tremendous. Like Diabolus In Musica I recommend just listening top to bottom. But in case you are pressed for time (although the entire album length is only 38 min) try these out: World Painted Blood Human Strain Psycopathy Red (the speed of this and the chilling hook is so intense - love it) Now we come to the latest installment - just released a month ago - the 11th studio album, Repentless. Paul Bostaph is back behind the kit and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt is now the Yin to Kerry King's Yang on guitar. No one can replace Hanneman, but Holt is a stud guitarist in his own right and can definitely handle the duties of being part of SLAYER. I still need to give it a few more spins before I decide how much I like the album or not. Not all songs available on youtube yet so here are a couple that are. You Against YouImplode Repentless - Caution - extreme violence/blood When the Stillness Comes And there we have the condensed version of SLAYER - GREATEST BAND OF ALL FUCKING TIME. Hope you enjoyed the read. IF not then FUCK YOU. BONUS Decade of Aggression - the best live double disc in history Five Things I Hate - Jeff Hanneman

#2 Iron Maiden Where to even begin with one of the most iconic bands (not just metal) of all time? For me it all starts with Steve Harris and his galloping bass. It is the heart and soul of the band and it's sound. It sets the pace and the tone for every song while its triple threat guitar core all thrash through their melodies and solos. And of course the timeless Bruce Dickinson who is one of the most dynamic frontman of any era. Not only does he put on a show with energy of a supernova, but he then flys the band to the next gig on thier personal 747!!! FUCKING METAL!!!!! And let's not forget Eddie the mascot. Always incorporated in their album art and a great brand image. So 1980 the band releases their self titled debut album and released to impressive success. But it was on their second album that I heard the song that would change my musical tastes forever. The song grabbed hold of me and didn't let go. I just knew I needed more of this sound. Murders in the Rue MorgueI was hooked and needed more. Luckily I quickly found that their 3rd album was a masterpiece and introduced me to their new lead singer - Bruce Dickinson. The title track is just epic on so many levels starting with the Vincent Price intro. Number of the BeastI could go on for pages on each album and song - but I am just going to leave you with this incredible compilation that someone with way more energy than I put together. Three and a half hours of magnificent Maiden.

Quick addendum - my favorite album probably alternates between Powerslave and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I can listen to either straight through on repeat for hours on end. And being such eternal badasses they just released their 16th (!!) studio album Book of Souls two months ago. And its great. Its classic Maiden but still relevant and fresh. I don't know how they keep doing it.

#3 Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath is the most influential metal band of all time. Every other metal band can say they have taken elements or learned their love of metal from Sabbath. Tommy Iommi has created some of the most legendary riffs in music and while distinct, each is also distinctly Sabbath. Originally led by frontman Ozzy Osbourne they created the genre of heavy metal with their down tuned guitars and bizarre (for the time period) subject matter.
Impossible to pick a favorite song from their catalog or even a favorite album as they have spanned so many decades and so much awesome. After Ozzy went solo in 1980 the band brought in Ronnie James Dio to front them - and while a very different style than Ozzy, still iconic in his own right and still had that Sabbath sound. The band had several lineup changes through the 80's and 90's (too many to recap) but they always had Iommi creating incredible riffs and maintaining that unique sound. Finally in 2013 they brought back the original lineup (minus drummer Ward who had other contractual obligations) released their 19th studio album called 13. Must be using Arkansas math (I kid!! its because of the year 2013). Anyway this album was vintage (damn you Michael Cole for ruining that word) Sabbath and an instant classic.
How to pick songs to share from such an extensive catalog is an issue. This is buy no means definitive but just a sample into the magnificence that is Black Sabbath.
NIB from their self titled debut album. Absolutely love this song and its structure with its story.
Next I could post the entire Paranoid album as that is the one that everyone knows with such iconic songs as Iron Man, War Pigs, Fairies Wear Boots, etc....
From their 3rd album have to go with Sweet Leaf for my man KS (also recommend Children of the Grave and Into the Void)
I have to skip ahead to one of my personal faves Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Ok this is getting out of hand again - moving right to RJD territory (yes I know I completely skipped Sabotage that has such classics as Symptom of the Universe and Hole in the Sky) RJD era was special - again in such a short time frame such incredible metal came forth from the band. Just posting the damn albums because they are that good top to bottom.
Heaven and Hell
Mob Rules
OK so KS will be mad for skipping over the Ian Gilliam era of Sabbath but we just have to get to the end or this is going to be another 3 post writeup. Heading right the end, album 13. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this entire album and it is just perfect. Every note. Please listen through but at the very least check out God Is Dead? and Age of Reason.
