Figured we needed a thread for play by play, discussion and commentary on this glorious event. Maybe useful for all the lightweights who are sleeping through to catch up on what they missed.
1:30 am Friday. The first match begins with the US Jesus Freak team of Bubba and Webb.
Bubba begins it by inviting the European fans to cheer louder during his backswing. He started that at Medinah.
Tom Watson says he invoked Al Davis on his last words to the team: "Just Win Baby"

Match 2, Martin Kaymer almost holes it from the fairway on the first hole and gets the first birdie of the weekend.
Rickie and Walker drop 1 down right out of the shoot.
The Euros have begun that rolling cheering chant you will hear all weekend.
In match 3, the young American rookies are paired together. Both deal with their first tee nerves and stripe it into the middle of the fairway.

Bubba yanks a 5 footer on 2 to lose the hole.
Poulter misses a three footer for par on 1.
Fowler misses a 4-footer on 2, then his partner Walker misses one even shorter. The Euros make their bird on 2 and go two up.
Damn..four missed putts in the first 2 holes. Nerves are wired.
Michael Jordan makes his first appearance on camera and says on the road as an underdog you have to keep it simple.
And make putts.

In THE match, #4 Mickelson and Bradley vs. Sergio and Rory, Mickelson stiffs it on one for a nice first hole bird. But freaking Rory then cans a 20 footer to get the halve. He is unreal. And we get the first fist pump of the weekend.

Impressive showing from the American rookies -- 5 up thru 10. Mickelson and Bradley edge ahead at 8 and the matches are 2-2.

Bubba and Webb were never in their match, hit a lot of bad shots and did not make a birdie. They get smoked 5 and 4 to put the first point on the board for Europe. I trust they will both be watching in the 2nd round. Rose playing well, but they ham and egged it well.

Alternate shot continues to be the bane of the US team. It's just tough to get your rhythmn when you don't hit every shot. If you are a competent golfer and haven't played alternate shot, try it sometime with your spouse. You hit balls from places on the course you've never been. And she might putt for birdies on some holes she normally doesn't. It's a good team-building exercise  . |

If this were a typical stroke play tourney, Justin Rose would be running away from the field. Through 12 holes today, he is 8 under. And that doesn't count a 5 footer for bird he didnt have to putt. He was at least that many under in 36 holes yesterday.
Kuch and Bubba are 7 under through 12...and are 2 down.

Great match right there. Everybody birdies 18. Rickie just hasn't made THE big putt though the entire weekend, like Rory has. Had his chance right there.

Really surprising that Mickelson and Bradley aren't playing at all today. Just 1 round of the 4 team matches? Something's not right with him, but regardless, Keegan should have gotten out today. Webb is the other guy not playing today, but after the way he played yesterday, that's not a surprise. He was the last man picked and he's playing like he should not have been picked.

Sunday singles get rolling with Senor Smoke Miguel Angel Jiminez (an assistant captain on the Euro team) on the first tee smoking his Cuban.
A few months ago, He was quoted: "I love to ski (he broke his leg doing so in 2012), I love to drink, I love to smoke, I love to compete and I love to have time with my friends," he said. "I don't want to stop any of those things. I'm sorry but I'm honest."

Mr. Nicklaus in the house. He was the guy who first said in the 70s that the British Ryder Cup team should become an all-European team. And he designed the course. The man's legacy lives in this event in so many ways.
