i will find out how "all world" hostas are. This may sound weird but my mother had the most beautiful hostas for decades, but then she moved to Florida and they don't survive there. I got pieces of them and they flourished over 17 yrs in Chi. I brought pieces of a few of the best with me to Tx. We will see if we get enough cold weather for them to have a "normal" dormant period. You'll have to keep us abreast of that situation. I am somewhat fascinated by Hosta's. My hostas made it. They just came out of the ground the last few weeks, kind of the same schedule they had in Chi. They are in shade. Looking good!

We could use a hand around here. How are you at taking on hornets, chiggers and fire ants? Hornets, done. Chiggers, we'll see. I have victories over fire ants and start drinking. They come back for more and I bring out Spaceballs the Flamethrower. It leads to some damage, but the kids love it. I have tried to deal with the Fire ants in a responsible way. Little bastards are taking over. I guess we're playing for keeps now. .

fire ants scare the crap out of me. Part of my job with my ball team down in the gulf coast of Florida was to watch the weight room while rehabbing guys and my team came in and lifted. A snake got into the weight room and I killed it with a weight and threw it outside the backdoor. A few hours later it was a clean spine thanks to the fire ants.

I have been successful thus far in keeping the yard entirely chemical free. Pouring hot boiling water on their mounds just pisses them off. The queen relocates and they just rise up again. Without resorting to harsh chemicals, I guess the next step is a flamethrower. Don't want to start any forest fires though. I guess I'd better do it before everything dries out. So I'm shopping for a flamethrower.

ummm a lighter and a can of wd40 will do the trick. That sounds like a redneck flamethrower. I have a feeling that in the hands of an untrained amateur like me, that won't end well for me. Of course, strapping 50 pounds of propane to my back and setting off a fire bomb might not end well either.

I tried vinegar, including 20% ag vinegar. Kills weeds great but doesn't seem to kill many ants. I guess if i shot it into the mound and got the queen, I would have more success. Getting the queen appears to be the key to destroying a colony. But the bitch appears to be protected by several thousand soldiers. Hard to get her. But I will keep at it.
