Mike North Joins WDRV-FM For Bears Post-Game Show

One-time Chicago radio mega-star Mike North is returning to the local airwaves, joining classic rocker WDRV-FM/97.1 The Drive for a new Sunday afternoon show. Tentatively titled "The Mike North Sunday Drive," North will host a three-hour Chicago Bears post-game show, which will immediately follow Bears games played on Sunday afternoons.
The debut episode of "The Mike North Sunday Drive" will air following the conclusion of the Chicago Bears' 2015 season opener on September 13th (approximately 3:00pm-3:15pm).
For over a decade and a half, North was one of the biggest names in Chicago radio, most famously known for being a top host on WSCR-AM/670 The Score for many years. With his outgoing personality, speak-your-mind attitude, and blue collar "everyman" persona, North quickly became a local media superstar, who was either loved or hated by fans. He was a star on WSCR-AM from its inception in January 1992, until his exit from the station in June 2008, leaving after North and CBS Radio could not come to terms on a new contract.
Since then, he has co-hosted morning television shows on Comcast SportsNet Chicago and WBBM-TV. He also had a brokered column page in the Chicago Sun-Times, hosted his own Internet radio show, was a principle executive in the short-lived Internet sports radio project ChicagoSportsWebio.com, and hosted programs for WIND-AM.
He remains working as co-host of FOX Sports Radio's nationally syndicated morning show, "FOX Sports Daybreak." In addition to that full-time job, North, one of the hardest working men in media, continues to work some of his many side jobs, including: writing sports columns twice a week in the suburban Daily Herald newspaper, and delivering custom videos for the Daily Herald's website three times each week. His new job with Hubbard Radio Chicago on WDRV-FM will be yet another side job for this ever-busy man.
Since WDRV-FM launched in 2001, it has never broadcast a sports talk show, instead focusing solely on classic rock and music of the past few decades. With the addition of Dan McNeil and Pete McMurray as morning show co-hosts earlier this year, very brief sports conversations have been heard on air, but the programming remained centered around music. The new Sunday show with North for the upcoming NFL season marks a major programming departure for the station.
The Chicago-based Hubbard Radio Senior Vice President of Programming Greg Solk, who still has his hand in the programming of Hubbard Radio's three Chicago stations, told the staff in a memo today: "As The Drive continues our endeavor to provide the best local and relevant content to audiences; we believe there is a void on Sunday afternoons for post-game Bears talk on the FM dial. I'm proud to announce today the addition of a brand new Sunday afternoon, 3pm-6pm, show on The Drive hosted by the one and only Mike North. Mike will give Chicago a no-holds-barred wrap-up show after every Bears game."
North said in a statement today: "It's gonna be great to be back on the air in Chicago once again talking Bears! I'm psyched to be back with the listeners and on 97.1 FM The Drive. It's a perfect station for me, with a massive male listenership. Chicago, get ready for the truth about the Bears!"
