16. John MellencampI once told scorejr that you can't do that head banging stuff all the time. Well actually that was two days ago but when it comes to toning it down some and just finding some good ol' fashioned folksy rock type of sound, then John Mellencamp is one of my go to's. The funny thing is that I didn't really even care all that much for him during my teens and most of my 20's as well. I mean I liked some songs here and there but he just didn't click with me for whatever reason. I kinda, sorta want to say that maybe somebody I couldn't stand liked Mellencamp and therefore I didn't. I almost remember something like that but maybe not. Anyways, the Dance Naked album in 1994 was what sucked me in and from there I went back and rediscovered his library and have been happier ever since. I don't know. I just love the beat. The little ditty. It's just fun, uplifting music. Feel good stuff. Mellencamp is also the reason I came back to Wisconsin when I was living in Illinois. So you can either thank him or curse him depending which state you currently live in. I had become fairly homesick and was never really a big city guy. Small Town is the song that pushed be over the edge and made me decide to come home. I think people forget how many mega hits this cat had: I Need a Lover, Hurts So Good, Jack & Diane, Pink Houses, Check It Out, Cherry Bomb, Paper in Fire, Authority Song, Human Wheels, Crumblin' Down, Rain on the Scarecrow, Lonely Ol' Night, R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Wild Night, Dance Naked. On top of those he has about 20 more songs that I absolutely love but most people probably have never heard of.

15. MetallicaI'm not necessarily a "speed metal" kind of metal guy but when these type of bands get things right, they REALLY get things right. I also never understood the "Black" album controversy. I don't get too over thinky about my music. If I like the sound, I like the sound. I guess some diehards didn't like this or that or thought they sold out or whatever......but whatever. To each their own. While some whine about it I'll just continue to rock the f*ck out to it. I will admit that because of the "speed metal" thing, I never got way too deep into their catalog. I did in fact sample a lot of it but other than mostly obvious ones, the deeper cuts weren't necessarily for me. The other thing is that a lot of their songs average like 7 minutes or so. I can only bang for so damn long you know? But man oh man: For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Master of Puppets, One, ...And Justice for All, Harvester of Sorrow, Enter Sandman, Sad but True, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Don't Tread on Me, Nothing Else Matters, Until It Sleeps, Fuel, The Memory Remains.

14. Judas PriestI was debating who should go ahead of the other, Priest or Metallica and well, you have your answer. Pretty damn close though. However when I really think about it, Rob Halford tips the scales......as he does against almost anybody. Halford is the second greatest pure singer I have ever seen Live. He is also a tremendous showman and that combination makes him one of the greatest frontmen of all time. Easily. scorejr and I seen these cats in Rockford (with Anthrax) and Halford just dominated and the show was fantastic. I was actually a hold out to metal until like 9th grade. I liked my rock and roll stuff but metal was just a bit too much for me at the time. Boy did I learn quick. So Priest was pretty much my gateway into the world of metal. Pretty damn good starting point!! So I guess I love the songs that everybody else does: You've Got Another Thing Comin', Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, The Hellion/Electric Eye, Screaming for Vengeance, Hell Bent for Leather, The Green Manalishi, Some Heads Are Gonna Roll, Turbo Lover, Diamonds & Rust, The Ripper(Ripkowski!!), Heading Out to the Highway, A Touch of Evil, Metal Gods, United, Take on the World, Rock Forever, Parental Guidance, Victim Of Changes, Love Bites, Dreamer Deceiver, Sinner, Exciter, Better by You, Better Than Me, Beyond the Realms of Death, Evening Star, Locked In, Ram It Down.

That is a solid 3, huge Mellencamp fan. I went to a concert of his several years back and didn't know going in what kind of show he would put on. It was awesome, the dude never stopped for like 3 hours.

Priest is so awesome. There is a ton of music that gets stale with time. Priest does NOT. They rock. I also love hove Halford was into the gay london scene with all the leather and yet no one knew he was gay so everyone started wearing leather and looking like him. That is truly hilarious and awesome. Everyone thought they were dressing "metal" when they were really dressing like the gay london underground.

Their music is so tight. Its like they use no crappy effects or gimmicks. They are quite exceptional. I might put them in my top 5.

Yeah it's crazy doing this list. Like I said sometime back, starting around 21 or so any of the bands listed could be as high as 4 or as low as 21. It's been a lot of fun going back and listening to all of this stuff again. It's been way too long since I had a really good music fix.

No clue who that is, and I am not afraid to admit John Denver was awesome. He should have to stuck to singing, clearly flying he sucked at.

He would have to show up to the wedding with his family of woodland creatures. This is glorious.
I think Kays should set you up with The Hammer. She would probably help Ivee's put on an addition.

13. StyxMy first rock and roll love. They were my first concert, my first song with a girlfriend, and just the perfect sound for a young KS. I know some of you young whippersnappers only caught them after they sold out but the early stuff was phenomenal. Actually they didn't necessarily sell out but Dennis DeYoung got all crazy headed and got them away from their hardcore roots. It's hard to believe that it was 1973 when they released Lady. It was 1975 when Lorelei and Suite Madame Blue were released. One of my favorite songs, Crystal Ball was released in 1976 along with Mademoiselle. But it was the 1977 release of The Grand Illusion that cemented them on the map. The album produced not only my favorite Styx song, Miss America but also contained 3 more massive hits in Come Sail Away, Fooling Yourself and The Grand Illusion itself. In 1978 Pieces of Eight was released and contained two more mega hits in Blue Collar Man & Renegade. Sing for the Day and I'm O.K. weren't too shabby either. Cornerstone was released in 1980 and didn't do a lot for me but did give me my first "song" with a girlfriend in Babe. Why Me was pretty good too. Paradise Theatre was released in 1981 and that tour was the first concert I ever went to. It was at the old Milwaukee Arena if I remember correctly. Even before the Bradley Center came along. A.D. 1928/Rockin' the Paradise, Too Much Time on My Hands, Nothing Ever Goes As Planned and The Best of Times were all songs I liked on that album. After that Mr Roboto came out and everything went to hell in a handbasket.
