SOLID series from Netflix. No matter what jackref says.
Kyle Chandler and Ben Mendehlson deliver great performances as the good/bad Rayburn brothers.

Awful series from Netflix. I will agree with Peeps that Ben Mendehlson is great. No, he is terrific. He should win all kinds of awards. Kyle Chandler in season 2 was much better than he was in season 1 where he was just a stiff. For the most part the acting is good, I'll concede that point. But that's it. Not one character on the show is likable. NOT ONE!! They are all fucking morons that make the worst possible decisions EVERY time! Its not even slightly plausible half the shit they do and then try to cover up. Season 1 the pacing and storytelling was terrible, regardless of what people want to think and tell you. If it wasn't for Danny (Ben Mendehlson) it wouldn't have been worth watching. There would be 30-40 min sections that NOTHING happened to advance the story. Not even character driven stuff, you already know the family is a bunch of dickheads and that was all outlined in first 3 episodes. There wasn't any significant clues to the overall premise, it was just BS filler of flashbacks and flashforwards for no reason. The ending of season 1 was laughable. Surprise Danny had a kid. Season 2 then just went sideways with this Ozzie character. John Leguizamo is just doing a caricature portrait of a stereotype and its awful. Any show worth its salt would have had John put a bullet in his head the minute he stepped into town. All this speculation and ZERO evidence is allowing the incumbent sheriff to keep the case open? Please. It is nonsensical. Don't even get me started on Kevin - that fucking twunt should have been the one John took care of. Complete and utter dipshit moron. Hate him. HATE. Actually I am rooting for O'Bannon now. He is the only one that his actions make sense really. And he calls out that stupid family every chance he gets. I take it back, he is the only likeable character on the show. People who say they like this show are lying or stupid. Sorry Peeps I just called you a liar.

I was skeptical about bringing in the "Poochie-esque" kid at the end of season 1. But what could have been a dumb plot contrivance turned into a solid character who was just broken by his relationship with Danny.
Season 1 was introducing the Rayburn family and how they all reacted to Danny. He was the black sheep who always screwed up and hurt mom when he came back and left. But surprise. He wasn't really the villain the family made him out to be. At least not at first. But we see how Danny became what he became.
Season 2 had the fallout from John's fatal decision. His fall was terrific as he goes from the respectable, reliable son to the new Danny by the end. Special shoutout to the kid who plays both Nolan and young Danny.
I will agree with you that Kevin was a terrible character and that Ozzie sucked. The O'Bannons are really the only decent people on the show.
Season 3 will be interesting.

I would argue that about Danny. Danny was always Danny - looking out for others and trying to deal with losing his sister/best friend . But the slant and the way the old man Rayburn forced the others to view him was the issue. Now that is another thing about storytelling in the show - the sister talking to Danny - wtf ever happened to that? Just a convenient device and then dropped? Things like that is what makes all the love thrown at this show piss me off. The writers/directors just use convenience instead of truly doing character driven story telling. There aren't many layers to these people outside of Danny and now John. But even John is still the same control freak, he isn't going to change. He was never the "good" one, just the least moronic or fucked up one.
The best part about the show is how much these people drink. And smoke. My god I haven't had a cigarette in almost 9 years but there are times where I think I may start again while watching this.

It was a coping mechanism for Danny's apprehension about returning to his family. She is the guilt he always carries.
The sister talking to Danny in season 1 mirrors how Danny talks to John in season 2.

But the sister was only in 3 episodes. I can see the guilt connection, but it just doesn't work right. Oh and we never found out what he wrote on that piece of paper that he was going to read when he first got back. And how much money can the Inn really have??? I mean it's not that big and sure doesn't seem to have a ton of people around ever. The way old man Rayburn was paying ppl off there has to be another source of income.

The Inn was full right before they closed for the reunion at the start of season 1. Then throughout the season there were 3 or 4 families there all the time.
I agree the dad was into some shady stuff though. I'd bet the Beau Bridges character sheds some light on this in season 3.

Another thing I just thought of that was bullshit. John just happens to have this super computer tech guy out in the middle of bumblefuck that will just dig shit up for him and magically send it to his computer terminal in the sheriffs office. Stupid. Oh and one more - the guy that killed Lowry? He is what a buck fifty soaking wet and he is going to get the drop on a hardened drug boss like Lowry? Please. Show sucks.

Season 3 was an abortion.
Season 2 wasn't even that good.
Should've stopped at season 1.
