Randomone - Too many of our thoughts are scrambled between twitter and instagram. Let's keep them in one place. Pretty sure everyone else hates U2 on this board and they can go fuck themselves over it. Anyway, been listening to the new album and started working my way back. Still think the newest album is one of their weaker outputs in quite some time. So interesting that the things I have read where it seems most fans prefer this album over Innocence. I just don't get it. Back to what I was meaning to share. I've decided to listen to all the albums most recent to oldest. Listening to No Line on the Horizon this morning. Its such a good album, but does seem to lack those big U2 songs that can live outside the album. There isn't much on the album that can work as a radio single. I don't need that personally, but I understand that what moves the needles, create that cash and gets one back in the mainstream. No Line is probably one of my darkhorse albums of their collection. It continues to get better with age. Ironically, the band hasn't played anything off this album since its album tour. More thoughts coming as I continue to listen to this album today. Also, I love Unknown Caller. Everything about it.

Will post my full thoughts when I get home today from running errands. Definitely a wise move to make our own thread & not just fill up our social media with comments.

Without sounding like that guy, I used to be a HUGE U2 fan. I still love the old stuff. Not a fan of the new stuff. I also don't blame people for getting whatever the market gives you. But I remember wanting to go to a concert in roughly 2003 and I think it was going to cost $350. It was sold out, so again, good for U2. But when I was more into music back in the day, they were top three for me.

Not a music guy but always liked U2. Still loved when Bono flashed the flag at the Super Bowl.

But when I was more into music back in the day, they were top three for me. The "best seats" are on the floor closest to the band and are still the cheapest tickets face value. I haven't had to pay over $100 a ticket and be within 10 yards of the band for the last 15 years. They make the people that want to have seats pay the most. I'm a concert snob so this works out perfectly for me.

I think right when Atomic Bomb came out is when I started to really take time to listen to full albums & not just stick to singles that I liked. So I remember senior year of high school burning all of their albums & really getting into it. I agree with you on No Line on the Horizon, while I wouldn't say I dislike it by any means, it's just lacking something. I know they got a lot of shit for how Songs of Innocence was released, but honestly I really liked about 75% of the album, the rest is just there. Song for Someone is my favorite, Iris is great, Raised by Wolves I like (but read people hate, which is odd). It falls off toward the end of the album, but still.
It's the top band on my bucket list to get to see live. They only come to big ass stadiums, nothing ever close to here in my town.
I'm a big comedy podcast fan, so when Scott Aukerman (of Comedy Bang Bang) and Adam Scott (from Parks & Recreation) made a podcast about their love of U2 called U Talkin U2 To Me? I immediately jumped on it. If you are a die hard U2 fan, this podcast will drive you fucking nuts because each episode is about 2 hours & they just riff for the first hour or so each ep, to the point where they establish bits. They've covered every album, did an episode where they went to a concert & yes, spoiler alert, it all concludes with them interviewing U2 on the podcast for 2 hours (which is amazing).
That podcast, which started in 2014 (and only has I think 24 episodes total thus far) really got me into being a bigger fan than I was. Mainly because they dissect the album & are funny while doing it.
Woodridge we should rank the U2 albums from best to worst, which sounds cheesy, but fuck it, this is our thread!

I will not be participating in this thread. I'm going to tell that radio station of yours to have "U2 Day" while they talk about your D League Basketball team.

The crazy thing is that I've been doing that for (U)2 years now and they've never been nominated. I was listening for 3 years or so before that and I also don't remember them being nominated during that time span either. But even though U2 isn't my thing, they still should've won a couple of times by now. It's baffling. They were like the biggest band in the world by a WIDE margin for like a decade straight. (At least as far as gross revenue goes)

On the topic of expensive tickets, pre-sale for Bon Jovi today. $425 lower bowl, floor are even more. I want to see these guys but damn it they are making it difficult for me to pull the trigger.

$425?? That's robbery. Then they come out on stage and say "we're going to play a few songs from our new album!"
I remember when I saw Paul Simon & he said that, I was so pissed.
STICK TO THE HITS, PAUL!!

Get Out Of Your Own away is really growing on me. I’m getting an Invisible vibe though.

It's a great song to crank up on your headphones because when it hits the "I could sing it to you all night, all night" line I really start liking it.
One of my favorite songs on the album.

For me, Atomic Bomb is an album that hasn’t been beaten by any of its predecessors. The more I listen to Innocence though, the more it climbs.
I enjoy Raised By Wolves. It’s a fine song. I don’t understand the hate on that one either. It was pretty cool live.
Song For Someone has a life outside the album for sure.
Every Breaking Wave is lyrically so good. Unfortunately describes my life, ha!
Cedarwood Road might be my favorite song on the album. So damn good live. Can’t get enough of the Edge and Clayton on that time.

Atomic Bomb came out right when I was a junior in high school & that was fucking great. Such a great album.
There's a song on All That You Can't Leave Behind that I think is one of the most underrated songs ever, Kite.
People always go to Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment, Elevation, Walk On (which is my favorite song on the album) for their favorites on the album, but Kite is a fantastic song. I think you put Kite on any of the latest albums, it'd stand out more, but I think it's forgotten on the album it's on.

I went through a period where it was played on repeat for awhile. I’ve only heard it live once and that was during the album tour. It is definite treated like a hidden gem on the B-Side. ATYCLB is pretty much a perfect album. I don’t think there’s a throwaway song on the album.

I actually had never heard Adam Scott’s podcast on U2. Thanks for reminding of it. Just listened to the first episode and enjoyed it. I didn’t like how quickly they blew past Boy without discussing songs other than I Will Follow. An Cat Dubh is one of their more unique songs and I was looking to get their take on it. Overall though they do a really nice job of not making it solely about U2. That would get boring. I enjoy the random jokes and off topic convos. Huey Lewis was one of my first favorite artists I loved so I should fit in well with these guys. At this point I think I know more about the band and I have a feeling there are some big disagreements coming my way soon with Scott Auckerman. Still very good and can’t wait to hear their opinions.

So happy you checked it out & liked it! The first episode they thought combining albums would be good to talk about, then soon realized that they can talk about a separate album each episode. I'm glad you like that they go off topic quite a bit, because a lot of U2 fans who dislike the podcast want it to be all U2 all the time, but they just don't realize these are comedians going off on bits.
The only few episodes I'd say skip would be the Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark ep where they talk about the broadway show. Also they do a commentary special where they do commentary over their podcast, which is funny, but annoying. You won't miss anything if you skip those.
The two Slowing It Down episodes are just to talk about how they became U2 fans with comedians Paul F. Tompkins & Jimmy Pardo (two of my favorite comedy podcasters, so I loved those eps). Also Staind Glass with comedian Todd Glass talks more about the band Staind than anything, haha. Just writing that out made me laugh. So ridiculous, yet so funny.
And The Joshua Tree episode makes me sad because Harris Wittels is a guest & he died a few years ago at a really young age. He was so damn funny. The reason this U2 podcast became a thing was because Scott Aukerman & Harris had a similar podcast called Analyze Phish, where die hard Phish fan Harris, tried to convince Scott that Phish was a great band, despite Scott thinking they're shitty.

I sort of dug the setting out by the Statue of Liberty. Was happy they played Get Out of Your Own Way.
At first I thought all we were going to get was Bono & The Edge cameo in Kendrick Lamar's opener.

I think it was a way to get in a political stance.
There were much better songs off the new album they could've played though.

Almost done with Rattle and Hum...
Not agreeing with some of these thoughts but that’s what makes music fun. I think they are missing the whole point of Rattle and Hum. It’s supposed to be the band discovery Americana and somewhat a love letter to the country. They miss the point that these guys were nothing just a few years earlier and in way way, these Irish lads captured the American dream.
I’m also pretty sure Atomic Bomb is going to put me clearly on team Adam Scott.

Yeah when you get to episode 20, the live episode from Sketchfest, they rank their albums & their Top 10 favorite songs. You'll fully approve of where Adam ranks Atomic Bomb. Scott, eh, not so much.

Listening to the Pop podcast today and will follow that by listening to the Pop album.
Thank God they both liked Hold Me, Thrill Me. That one is very high up there for me. Scott said something like, “if only Pop was like that song.” Would have been a bad ass rock album for the late 90’s. However we wouldn’t have gotten ATYCLB and how inspiring that album became during the 9-11 time period.
