I've forgotten quite a bit about the topic. But it's a fascinating tale of financial fraud, backstabbing, and ambition.
On the creative side, I don't see Orndorff being able to be the top babyface on that level. Rhodes had the best track record and ability to do it. But I agree with Speeps, he would have struggled as THE guy in that territory. I believe all of the Von Erich stuff completely. But Fritz would have tried to screw Vince within one year of the deal. I've always thought Fritz was one of the guys that at least loosely discussed having Vince whacked. Slaughter could have done the G.I. Joe deal with Vince. That could be a sleeper option instead of Hogan.

Slaughter would have been a decent option, but his in-ring work was worse than Hogan's. That would've gotten old quickly.
Fritz was a crooked, evil mofo. He was the Joe Jackson of wrestling. Or maybe Joe Jackson was the Fritz Von Erich of Motown.

Would Vince have gone all in on making someone like Dusty or Slaughter his Hogan-esque level babyface when he’s the kind of guy who gets so boned up over muscles and physique? I think the charisma of Dusty could’ve made it over appearance, but it’s interesting to think about.
Just think of Dusty Rhodes chewable vitamins.

I'm sure as hell am not. WWE may not either. I just don't think he has the on camera or in ring charisma. Hogan connected with the audience and Paul kind of always struggled to do that. OKC pull some of that late career Orndorff WCW footage haha! |

When you think about the time period and what Vince was looking for, the pool gets pretty small actually. My final list on who could make it sustained mainstream and Vince would have gone along with is Hogan, Piper and Savage. And again, Piper and Savage don't get to that 6'5"/6'6" height I think Vince needed.
