Swerve was 13-0 in his about 4 month reign. Beat Christian & Ospreay on PPV. I thought he had a good reign, but AEW World Title runs have been known to go much longer than usual, so with this being short, it could feel like a letdown. I think a story that could be told is that Hangman has always loomed over Swerve’s reign. Despite not winning the Casino Gauntlet, Hangman got some sense of retribution now that Swerve lost his title. Their feud can continue at All Out while the title isn’t involved. I don’t think that was Swerve’s only World Title reign. If this was during a different time of the year, I’d assume his reign would’ve gone longer. I think it’s the fact for me is some of the tv matches I recall just go too long for a world champ with guys that should not take long with. Maybe I’m misremembering but that’s my issue, not the record. Also, It was just a weird title reign in how all of it was booked. I’m not sure what his story was. He never really felt like he was the champ.

Sidenote: Bischoff went live on YouTube almost immediately after the PPV. As I asked on YouTube: Why does Eric Bischoff spend so much time consuming a product he despises? Because it makes him money.

So you can do that math. I said I could be misremembering. It’s my opinion.

He never really felt like he was the champ. He never felt like the focus of the show. He seemed to be overshadowed, either by the Elite/AEW angle that went nowhere or by other talent. They tried to have him showcase himself on the Rampage after the NBA playoff game, which fizzled out by people tuning out by the thousands. Instead of just making him the focus of that first Dynamite.

She had to win. She’s so damaged right now that if she loses the title I’m not even for sure where she would go from there. I think they have to lean into the fact she is hated by including the belt, even if it’s XPac heat (or no heat). The hope is at some point she gets her footing and it will be a big deal when she loses. That’s my guess anyway. For me she’s felt like a different person and not in a good way. Her promos have been very weak and super rehearsed (a WWE staple) and her in ring work has just been average at best. Tonight her & Britt were on different pages for nearly the whole match and the crowd was dead. It feels like she’s a WWE talent taking a break from WWE before going back to WWE. I haven’t felt that way about many signings. She’s been the most obvious.

To spend 9 months on a story and cap it off at your show for the ladies program is a testament to everyone involved and good on the crowd for being there tonight every step of the way.
I assume Mariah vs Mina could be next, but I wonder what Toni’s spiral will be following the loss?
I’m trying to think of what has been a better 9 month long female storyline better than this one?

My match rankings
Danielson vs Swerve MJF vs Ospreay Mariah vs Toni Casino Gauntlet (finish soured me) Tag Team Triple Threat London Ladder Match Darby vs Jack (very short and post match was the bigger story) Mix Tag (pre-show) 16 Man Tag (pre-show) Chris Jericho vs HOOK 10 man tag (pre-show) Britt vs Mercedes

I’d switch the Ladders & Toni/Mariah, which I thought was excellent and should’ve gotten a lot more.
Jericho/Hook too high, but the final moment made that match/feud though.
Britt/Mercedes rated the lowest
Ospreay/MJF & Swerve/Danielson 5 stars plus

For as bad as I heard the Mercedes-Britt match was, old Dave would have given that match 1 star. The AEW rub is unreal with this guy. Who knew Danielson couldn’t have a 5-star+ match until he got to AEW and now that’s all he does. If you let an unbiased person read through all of Dave’s ratings through the years, the person would be dumbfounded looking at the numbers on paper as to what happened in the last 5 years. Probably Biden’s fault - inflation.

Yeah similar percentage to last year.
Still nothing to sneeze at. AEW should be proud.
