Hate is a strong word. I should say deeply annoyed. I tune in for Kaplan and there this sidekick who just...man...he is something. He's the Tribune's senior sports columnist and has absolutely nothing to say.

I was probably close to hating Mike North. But I had this conversation with my dad last night. I don't hate the individual. I hate the system. My dad is pissed that Kevin Millar, Eric Byrnes, etc. were hired by MLB Network. He thinks it's a grand conspiracy. I told him there's a problem. If people didn't watch them, they would be fired. I mute Intentional Talk COMMERCIALS. I don't like Kevin Millar or anything having to do with him. But there are people that like him. There's also people that hate him, and watch more. That's why we end up with these clowns.
As far as the local scene, I've already stated I don't understand the Ramblin' Grimace hate. But I understand the issues. If that makes sense. But to my earlier point, I think Haugh was hired for the role because he fights with Kaplan. I think they like each other enough, but it's almost the forced argument rule of media today.

I only recently got the mlb network and have had Byrnes and Millar on occasionally. I have always liked Byrnes as a player and the only thing I heard him do on the network was talk about how awesome Baez's moon shot at citi field was. I find Chris Rose more annoying than either of them so far...but I have always found Chris Rose and his cartoonish lispy voice annoying. Actually what makes that show hard to watch is it looks like cnbc moneytalk with all the scrolling crap all over the screen. My eyes get sucked into a vortex of stats and scores.

MLB Network at the start was baseball porn. All analysis, couple decent looking women, and highlights. They would include just the right amount of national games so I didn't have to buy the MLB Package, my Cinemax baseball porn.

I guess when judging hosts I go with the beer test. Would I want to grab a beer with the guy:
Score: Yes: Terry, Mully, drinky and Hanley No: Grimace, Bernstein and Larry
ESPN: Yes: They all seem like normal fine guys.
Game: Yes: Mostly everyone: No: Haugh (He's just so boring and ugh), McDoink (I think he's really fake)

Terry is a gosh darn thing. He's insanely fun, but he doesn't realize it. He could make George Carlin uncomfortable. Drinky and I had a day in Lockport in between his wives. Good day, but he's who you think he is. Don't worry, I didn't sleep with him. That was Steve Stone.
Bernstein is an OK guy. But, yeah.
Goff is the in the running for top-five of funniest people I've ever been around.
Laurence was a complete knob to me. I was in the studio when he was hosting for Terry. Mac had recently come on board, and even he went out of his way to shake my hand. Laurence just gave me the "shake that" and acted above me. I still gave him a chance for a year, but he was a total douche again. He doesn't realize he's a douche, so I forgive him.
I don't have experience with anyone else. But I totally get the premise. I'd still share a beverage with Ramblin' Grimace.
Oh, Kaplan has always been awesome, but I haven't consumed alcohol with him. BIG FAN.

I notice such a difference with Terry the few times Bernstein isn't in. He's at such ease with drinky or when Mac and him talked while the other two sat back. Bernstein has become a bad influence for him.
And actually, Bermstein is tainting a few of these guys and influencing them to act like assholes on radio. Goff seems likes a good guy but his adoption of the Dan act sucks. I really despise him even more than Grimace. He just seems like a really selfish bad dude even though I believe he's a great father and contributes a lot of charity. I just can't get over all the subtle racism, sexism and assholery.

I could have beers with everyone on WSSP except maybe Chuck. He just seems like an old crusty sloth. I don't think he is a dick or anything but he would probably never speak and just give a head nod or 2...slam his beer and bounce to the golden tee game.
The only guys I think I would enjoy having beers with on wscr would be the producers....especially Mac's old crew. Those guys just seem more my speed.
The only guy I have ever had beers....many of them...with is the future of Cubs broadcasting. When he arrives to replace Pat in the booth I will be very happy for him.

Score:
Yes: Boers - Would be an all day event. Spiegel - Would be ok for 1 or 2 but would then get way too in depth about the cocktail napkins or something. Somewhat afraid he would start smelling after a bit. drinky - One or two. His unfunny slapstick would start ticking me off by drink 3. Hanley - Fairly close to my Matty description Herb - This one may go longer than expected. If he got all salty it might be golden. Grote - I'm out once he gets to his second Grobber impression
No: Mully - Too yelly. No way I'm drinking with the yelly guy. Bernstein - Too smart. Too quainty. I'd smash that wine bottle over his head and pour Calvert straight into the cuts. Laurence - Too sucky. Way too uncool. Grobber - Not a chance. Would steal all the veggies out of your drink. Rosenbloom - I'd punch his smug ass and get arrested. So he's out. Rozner - Don't want to talk about hockey. Zawaski - See Rozner

I kind of hijacked Kirkwood's point. Guys you would have a Beer with v Not. I would have a beer with anyone that's been on sports radio. It would probably get ugly, like when I saw Chet at the Hawks Convention. I mocked him for his briefcase. Yes, I asked Chet if he had crackers in the briefcase. He was not pleased. But he didn't end up with a black eye.
But again, Kirkwood's point is guys you think you'd enjoy drinking with on a given day/night. I can't think of a current producer I wouldn't sit down with tomorrow. I'd love to hang with Tannehill. That guy is insanely talented.

I don't think I could hang with Drinky unless I was drunk. He seems like one of the guys from high school that I would never hang out with. I have no use for small talk and shooting the shit cliches. We are talking about something interesting or we are not talking.

ESPN
YES Hood - Pretty sure I could drink all day with him Jurko - I'd spend a good deal of the day with him until he started getting sloppy. He has sloppy written all over him. Carmen - I'd have a couple with him and then start counting glasses behind the bartender out of sheer boredom. Silvy - Probably after a couple hours I would have had enough. He's just too nice. Greenie - It would be like the version of Bernsie if Bernsie was cool. I could drink all day with Greeny. Golic - Would be a lot like Jurko but less sloppy
NO Waddle - Just something rubs me the wrong way. Too highfalutin.
THE GAME
Not really familiar with any of them except Finfer. I'd definitely drink a few with him.

Hood isn't as good of a guy as everyone thinks. Really, really cranky. I offered to help him with some of the wrestling stuff back in the day and he acted like he was Dan Patrick.

However, that was when I decided to retire from sports radio to spend more time with Rick Telander's kids. They could land some ass. Why not? "That's my friend Drop In. He likes you. My dad is the guy that wrote the story about robots taking over the sports world in the Sun Times. Why are you still wearing anything?"

I am watching the end of the replay of Kap and Haugh and Hampton is on. Good god did he ever just go off Doug and OB style with a 15 minute non stop relentless rant on the entire organization.

What I found more interesting was Peanut was on this morning and they asked him about leaders stepping up.....and he said the 3 leaders are Briggs, Jared Allen and Forte. He also said that they lead when things are good and when things are bad. I found that very interesting. I think he is saying things about Marshall and especially Cutler without really saying them.

It's obvious Cutler has not a clue about leadership. Marshall might have a clue -- he's Colonel Mustard with the lead pipe.

After seeing everyone all chummy with Mac on Sports Talk Live last night, I'm guessing it's a matter of weeks before he's announced as the drive time lead host.

Game over.
Nine months after the bosses of WGN AM 720 launched Chicago’s first FM sports/talk station, they’re throwing in the towel on the ambitious but unprofitable venture. Tribune Media will cease programming on WGWG LP 87.7, known as The Game 87.7 FM, at the end of the year, insiders said Thursday.
Also out, effective immediately, are former WGN personalities Jonathon Brandmeier and Garry Meier, sources said. Brandmeier’s morning show aired on The Game 87.7 and the online streaming site wgn.fm. Meier’s afternoon show aired only on wgn.fm.
David Kaplan and David Haugh, whose midday show on The Game 87.7 is simulcast on Comcast SportsNet Chicago, are expected to continue on the cable sports network after the radio operation ceases. But few of the station’s other sports/talk hosts are expected to remain employed. The weekday lineup includes Alex Quigley, Ben Finfer, Jarrett Payton, Harry Teinowitz, Spike Manton, Mark Carman and Connor McKnight.
All of the moves are being made, according to insiders, because the company has been unable to generate sufficient advertising revenue to sustain the programming and talent costs. Total Chicago radio revenue is down 11 percent from last year, according to Miller Kaplan Arase market figures for October 2014.
The GameTribune Media launched The Game 87.7 last February on a low-power television frequency that doubles as an FM radio signal. Leased from Venture Technologies Group, which owns the license, the station previously drew respectable ratings for smooth jazz and hard rock music formats. Despite programming and marketing support from news/talk WGN and its status as the only sports/talk station on FM, the upstart competitor to CBS Radio’s WSCR AM 670 and ESPN’s WMVP AM 1000 never caught on.
In the latest Nielsen Audio survey, The Game 87.7 tied for 38th place overall with a 0.5 percent audience share and cumulative weekly audience of 218,600.
Hired by previous management and once among WGN’s highest profile personalities, Brandmeier and Meier both had been sidelined under the station’s current president and general manager, Jimmy deCastro — the same Jimmy deCastro who brought Brandmeier and Meier to their greatest prominence when they worked for him at WLUP FM 97.9 in the 1980s.
Brandmeier, 58, joined WGN in December 2011 to host mornings, but failed to connect with the station’s core listeners or attract younger ones as hoped. Replaced by Steve Cochran in September 2013, Johnny B. moved to wgn.fm and added The Game 87.7 last February. He is not under contract.
Meier, 64, joined WGN in April 2009 and hosted afternoons until last May, when he moved to wgn.fm. Still the station’s highest paid on-air employee at a reported $800,000 a year, Meier has a contract that runs through October 2015.
