I'm ranking them on everything, match quality, entertainment, historical significance. While some matches like Hogan/Andre at WM3 was arguably one of the biggest moments historically, it was a garbage match & I didn't really care for it, so it gets a lower rank.
On the other hand, entertainment plays a big factor, case & point, the Sapphire/Dusty/Macho/Sherri match would've been ranked like 200+ spots lower had it just been match quality. But I was really entertained by it.
Eddie & Test had no reason to be as good as it was. But I really enjoyed it. Zero historical significance, but that doesn't matter in that case. Trips/Batista was an alright match, better than JBL/Cena that year, but I wasn't really into Batista yet, good not great.
Hope my rambling answered your question, haha.

80. Edge vs Alberto Del Rio (WM27) Most of us just saw this as a usual solid Edge match, but we didn’t know at the time it was his last time in the ring. I’m really happy that Edge didn’t go out on a stinker, as this Mania only had a few matches that made it worth watching again. This was one of them as I liked the chemistry Del Rio had with Edge & it was fitting that Christian was in the corner of his best friend, the guy he got into the business with. Looking back on it, I wish it was Edge vs Christian, but no one, even Edge, knew he was done after this. I was sort of against this opening the show, but it oddly fit. I thought they pulled the trigger too early on Del Rio as a main event guy, but it is what it is, still doesn’t take away from this match being a very good opener. Not Edge’s best by any stretch, if anything, it will probably be toward the bottom. Which isn’t a slam on this match, it’s a testament to the caliber of Mania matches that Edge has put on over his career.
79. Twin Towers vs Rockers (WM5) I only ranked 3 other matches on this Mania card higher, two of them being title matches & I’ll get to the other in a bit, but in terms of tag matches, this was the best one on the show. Two young good looking guys, over with the fans, taking on two of the biggest dudes in the company. Your typical David vs Goliath match and it worked out perfect. It did everything it was intended to do, get the smaller guys over with being the underdogs, get the heels over as monsters, nothing else needed to be done. Shawn & Marty were a fantastic team & showed that even with the size mismatch, could do double team moves to Bossman & Akeem. On the other hand, they bumped their asses off when needed for the Twin Towers. Bossman turned a Michaels dive into a powerbomb, then you have Akeem do a little Air Africa & turn out the lights, the party’s over for the Rockers.
78. Demolition vs Strike Force (WM4) Tag team division in the late 80s was probably the golden era of tag teams in the WWE. Demolition was a strong heel team, two power dudes, who, despite being a version of L.O.D. were good workers. That’s what made them memorable, because I think had Ax & Smash sucked in the ring and put on boring ass matches, they wouldn’t have been as over as they were. Instead, both guys could hang with strong teams like the British Bulldogs, Hart Foundation & in this case, Strike Force. Martel & Tito were such a strong tag team, as, like I’ve said in their Brain Busters match, they are an incredibly underrated tag team when talking about successful duos. This is one of the more solid tag title matches in Mania as it got time, was entertaining & had a strong heel finish with Mr. Fuji having them use it to win the titles. One of the rare occasions where heel tactics lead to tag title wins on a WrestleMania.
77. Tatanka vs Shawn Michaels (WM9) I always read how people really didn’t care for this match due to the slow pace of it, but think about it, what did you expect? It’s not a 5 star classic; instead it was a solid opener for an incredibly lackluster PPV. This Mania, next to 2, is the worst Mania in history, so matches like this, stand out more than others. Maybe that’s why I ranked it as high as I did. The odd pairing of Luna with Shawn was puzzling, but it seemed more like Luna was after Sherri than with Shawn. That’s another random pairing, Sherri & Tatanka? My goodness, the whole thing with the ladies really wasn’t necessary was Sherri/Shawn was done and should’ve been done at the Rumble. Tatanka as the undefeated challenger & Shawn the cocky champion, it was a good little match, and I can’t talk shit about it. Slow, maybe, but not a snoozer by any stretch. Bad ending, but they for some reason, still wanted to keep Tatanka’s streak going. Shawn escapes as champ, but Tatanka still has his streak. Weird finish, but I get it, you got to keep the Lumbee Indian undefeated…….until he wrestles Ludvig Borga later in the year.
76. Crush vs Randy Savage (WM10) It was a weird stipulation, with one of the best, most creative finishes for the time. The object of this match was to pin your opponent, then they have til the count of 10 to get back into the ring. Very weird, but I’ll give these two credit, they made the most out of that silly stip & made their way to the back of MSG where Savage tied up Crush by the feet (all in 10 seconds, man the ref must’ve been slow counting). I sort of wished there was a different stip as these two hated each other dating back to September/October of the previous year. However it was a bittersweet ending, because this was Savage’s final real big moment in the WWF. I always hear rumors of Savage wanting to put over Shawn Michaels after a long build up & I would’ve loved that, however, Vince didn’t want to go that route, but instead, Savage made Crush look like a million bucks. Glad Savage’s last moment was on a high note.
75. The Rock vs Steve Austin (WM19) Austin’s final match ever, which, to this day, I can’t believe he hasn’t wrestled again. It sucks because, unfortunately, I didn’t like this match very much at all. However, it still made the Top 75 & that just shows you how much I like both guys. I liked the over the top heel Rock, but it wasn’t as entertaining as his previous heel run. Austin on the other hand, just returned the previous month & you could tell he wasn’t the same. Not sure if it was injuries or what, but it didn’t seem like the Stone Cold we knew a year earlier. They did comedy in this match, did their spots from previous Mania matches, everything, I just didn’t care about Rock/Austin 3 and that’s shocking even to me. Just 2 years prior, this was one of the biggest matches ever, but this year it felt like it could barely make the Top 3 matches on the card. All that said, even their match I liked the least, still ranks this high & that’s mainly because of how big of fans I was (and still am) of Austin & Rocky.
74. Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant (WM3) Historical significance is the only reason why this match is ranked this high, as Andre getting slammed by Hogan is one of the most memorable images in the history of wrestling. I've stated I also consider match quality & just overall how much I myself liked it. That being said, the match itself stunk, but this is one of the rare cases where we weren’t expecting a classic, it was what it was, not good. The build for this match was bigger than anything as Hogan finally overcame the Giant. Heenan was great in his role as he & Andre rode back on the mechanical ring with his head buried in his hands as Hogan celebrated. It was a cool visual. I’m not going to talk about the match, you know it sucked, we all know it sucked, but Hogan slammed Andre, end of story.
73. The Rock vs Ken Shamrock (WM14) Growing up in the Attitude Era was a fantastic time, there are so many things that stand out in my mind (I remember damn near everything, who am I kidding), but the chair shots that Rock gave Shamrock were so sick, you know damn well nothing like that would be seen today (though I’m sure Shamrock would do it do himself). These two had a feud dating back to November & this was the big payoff. Rock was so over that you knew Shamrock wasn’t winning, but I didn’t care, I really enjoyed the match. Shamrock fighting off the Nation to get to Rock was great, but they fell back into the old routine of Shamrock goes crazy & doesn’t release the ankle lock, thus getting DQ’d. So it made Shamrock look like an idiot, but it accomplished what they wanted. It was a quick, 5 minute match, that didn’t go on too long. Perfect.
72. John Cena vs Bray Wyatt (WM30) The build for this match was crazy, which, saying that in 2014 about a WWE feud, is pretty impressive in itself. Bray Wyatt is one of the most unusually polarizing characters in the WWE, yet, they just look at him as a character who can lose all the time & not lose any steam, however, that’s incorrect. Wins & losses matter in wrestling, I don’t care what anyone says or argues, you can’t sway my opinion otherwise. For a guy who has been the face of the WWE for over 10 years at this point, what harm is it in having John Cena lose? They’re all about 50/50 booking, why not have Cena gain his revenge the next month? Or have him lose TWICE to Wyatt, questioning whether he still has it, then to overcome & win the 3rd match? Instead, we got a build & Cena winning and winning and winning over Wyatt. How that helps anyone, I’ll never know. Hell, he did it with Rusev the following year & Rusev hasn’t been the same since. That’s not Cena’s fault, its booking. It’s ok to let your golden boy lose once & a while. This match was very good, Wyatt turned it on in this one and Cena knows what it’s like at Mania. These two had good matches with one another, even with the involvement of Harper & Rowan, it was a fine match, that should’ve had a different result.
71. Kane vs Undertaker (WM20) Kane burying the Undertaker alive at Survivor Series pretty much made it a guarantee this match was going to happen. I loved the build for this as we hadn’t seen the Dead Man version of the Undertaker since 1999. It was long overdue as the American Badass gimmick went on for about 2 years too long. So when lights would go out, gongs would hit, the choir started singing (or chanting, whatever), hell the ring started moving, I was psyched to see Taker back. What I didn’t expect, was the surprising return of Paul Bearer! What an awesome surprise for the biggest show of the year! I seriously didn’t think he’d be back & was delighted that he & Taker were back together. It made it more special. The match itself, eh, not these two guys’ best work by any stretch, in fact it wasn’t that good, at all. However, just the build & theatrics of The Undertaker is why I ranked it this high. Wasn’t as memorable as their first Mania encounter, but still memorable regardless.

70. Seth Rollins vs Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns (WM31) I saw Seth Rollins 1st match for IWA-MS back in 2005. In fact, someone posted the match on YouTube recently, it’s awesome. So to see him go on from there to ROH and become World Champ there was amazing. Then he gets signed by WWE & I thought it was so cool, then he became a tag team champ, then a MITB winner, then, on this night, WWE World Champ. It’s so damn cool to see someone from my hometown make it to the main event & top of the WWE. To think this might not have happened though, as it was a last minute decision to send Rollins out there. Yes, this was the night that Suplex City was created, yes Roman & Lesnar had a pretty hard hitting match, but the ending is what set the crowd on fire. One of the most memorable endings to a Mania. I thought logically though & put my enjoyment of the finish aside, because if I hadn’t, this match would’ve been Top 10 just because of the hometown boy. Instead, I kept it 70, because, despite what people thought about Reigns (and still do) not being the guy, he performed well. It’s never been an issue about his in ring work; it’s been he’s not a strong talker and creative wants to shove him down our throats, by any means necessary. Instead, on this night, what we got was fantastic. New heel champ, Brock screwed & Reigns losing. It’s a win, win, win scenario. One you don’t see that often, since heels usually don’t close Mania’s with wins.
69. Undertaker vs Diesel (WM12) The slow Diesel heel turn I really liked & even how they got to this match I liked as well. So the confrontation was inevitable as these two put on a great big man vs big man match. I know Nash gets shit for having only 7 moves or whatever, but I liked Nash in his WWF days. WCW ring work was a different story, but on this night, I guarantee Taker was happy that he was wrestling Diesel and not Bundy or Giant Gonzales. Diesel showed he could hang with guys like Bret & Shawn during his title reign & even though you won’t see Nash’s name on all time greatest wrestlers list, I think he gets a bad rep. His WWF days shouldn’t get lumped into the WCW stuff. During his Diesel run, I enjoyed it & I enjoyed this match. Undertaker gets a huge win & Diesel would only stick around for a few more months before making an awful lot of money in Atlanta for Ted Turner.
68. Bret Hart vs Yokozuna (WM10) Despite both men wrestling earlier in the night, this is the better of their two matches in Mania history in my opinion. That’s a testament to Yoko especially, because we’ve seen Bret wrestle multiple times in one night before, but Yoko only had a few matches off before having to go back out there. Without the dark cloud of Hogan looming, I felt much better about this one as well, because no one was an afterthought, both guys got their rightful chance to shine. It was fantastic storytelling from beginning to end, as Bret lost the opener to Owen, which not many people saw coming, then you had Yoko defeat Lex by referee shenanigans, then both Yoko & Bret had a great one on one. Roddy Piper as the ref, I’m fine with, because he wasn’t nearly as over the top as he would be the following Mania, so it all worked out. The final shot of Mania, Bret holding the title high in the air, celebrating with the good guys, only for Owen to stare him down from the entrance way, shaking his head, disappointed. It set up Summerslam perfectly, which worked out even better once Owen got the rub as King of the Ring a few months later.
67. The Undertaker vs Randy Orton (WM21) I think they pulled the trigger on turning Orton face way too early. They should’ve kept him heel as World Champ for at least a few months to let Triple H stew that he wasn’t the center of attention, but we all know, mid 2000’s Triple H wouldn’t allow himself not to be the main event guy, so they turned Orton face essentially the next night when Evolution turned on him. It was weird & Orton felt like a forced good guy, despite wrestling Evolution over the rest of 2004. Then he started hooking up with Stacy Keibler, which, well done Randall, but then he started getting the urge to change his ways & he dropped her, literally, with a RKO & heel Orton was back & ready to roll against The Undertaker. So I’m thankful after all Orton had bounced around from in 2004, he was back to his prickish character, which he’s much better at. He had wrestled upper level talent for well over a year with Evolution & showed he could really go, so I had no doubt in my mind he’d deliver in this match, which he did. These two put on a fantastic match & it would only continue from here. Did it go on a little too long, absolutely, I didn’t really care for the handicap matches with Cowboy Bob, but eh, I’m talking about this match & I really enjoyed it. The young gun could hang with the respected veteran.
66. Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker (WM30) So here we are, perhaps the most historic defeat in Mania history, one that, I don’t care what you say, NO ONE saw coming, aside from Vince McMahon himself. They’ve ran that expression of the dude with the shocked face after the finish into the ground the amount of times they’ve shown it, but, at the time, it’s exactly my expression I had at my house watching live. I couldn’t believe it & to an extent, I don’t even think anyone in the match could believe it either & they even knew it was going to happen! Unfortunately what could’ve been an all time classic was hampered by the fact that Taker was concussed super early in this thing & he moved in slow motion for a majority of this thing. I’m not saying it’s his fault, things like that happen & Taker toughed it out, like only he could. I sometimes think, what would’ve happened had they kept the streak going? They could’ve gotten more out of it. Was Brock really the guy to do it? Looking at the time I’m writing this, Shane McMahon vs Taker was just announced & if Shane wins, he wins the company, but had Taker’s streak been still alive, he has a legit strong reason to try to defeat Shane. We don’t know what he’ll say about it as of this writing, but it’d be pretty weird to have Shane be the one to end the streak, so maybe of all people Taker has fought, maybe Brock should’ve been the guy. Paul Heyman was perfect with the outside reaction & the rest is history. The silence from the crowd was so memorable.
65. Rob Van Dam vs William Regal (WM18) One of the most underrated wrestlers in the world is/was William Regal. I could legit watch this dude wrestle for hours, days even. I always was entertained by him dating back to when I was a kid & I first saw him in WCW in 1993. He has amazing charisma, could outwrestle anyone & was hilarious when need be. Then you had RVD, who was easily the most over guy in the Invasion storyline & they even put him in a main event title match…..once. I just felt RVD was wasted in this whole thing as the Hardcore Champion. Yes, his matches were amazing against guys like Jeff Hardy, but would it have been so bad had he been regularly challenging for the World title? I guess they were just so stacked at the time they didn’t have room, but it’s still a bummer. Anyways, I was worried about RVD for this show because, the month prior, he fought Goldust at No Way Out. It was weird. So luckily he was paired with Regal & what we got was a great opening match that got the crowd going. It was essentially a repeat of the year prior with Regal, who fought in the opener with another awesome talent & the crowd was hot from the start. RVD took some sick bumps in this match, getting folded up by suplexes like only he could. Regal was great, RVD was great, when people look back on this Mania, the two matches they talk about really are Taker/Flair & Rock/Hogan, if you want a hidden gem, this is it for Mania 18.
64. Cody Rhodes vs Rey Mysterio (WM27) Just a regular match, no titles on the line, no stipulations, just two amazing workers, given PLENTY of time to go out there on the biggest stage & do what they do best. I’m one of the biggest Cody Rhodes supporters in the world, how he hasn’t had at least one World title reign under his belt is beyond me, as I think he’s the total package. He can wrestle, cut promos, charisma, everything, it’s just unfortunate that WWE doesn’t see him as a main eventer, because I certainly do. This was Rey Mysterio’s final Mania match (I’m not counting the Mania 30 battle royal) & while it shouldn’t have been, because I liked Rey, it was just a bummer injuries got the better of him. This is legit the last feud I remember of Rey’s in the WWE, because with injuries & suspensions, it’s all a blur afterwards, he’d just pop up every now & then. I had to look it up; did you know Rey Mysterio fought R-Truth at Over the Limit 2011? I had zero clue! Anyways, back to this match, I think this was a star making performance by Cody as a singles talent. After time of having the Legacy memory erased, Dashing Cody Rhodes was a wonderful character & this was a great match. Both dudes put on a great showing.
63. Rockers vs Haku & Barbarian (WM7) An absolute underrated little gem of a match, as The Rockers had a team to work with that were tough as hell, but weren’t 400 pounders, so they could fly around more too. The last Mania that Marty & Shawn would team and they made it count as this match is exactly how you want to start off a Mania. Haku & Barbarian I’m really surprised didn’t team more in WWF, of course they would later in WCW, but in the WWF, they were just Heenan Family members, but rarely teamed. They were a great duo in this one as they beat the hell out of the Rockers before the tables were turned, Marty gets the hot tag & the babyfaces get the pin & the crowd goes wild after a hot start. Sure Hacksaw Jim Duggan was doing commentary, but that’s ok, because this match was so good that it didn’t matter. If you’re going to watch 3 matches from this card, this would be one of them. We’ll get to the other 2 later, because they are awesome.
62. Chris Jericho vs Christian (WM20) One of the most entertaining builds & payoffs in a long time as the Jericho/Trish/Christian/Lita story was fantastically booked & everyone did their part perfectly. After Lita sort of left this angle, it was Christian who turned on Jericho, who thought Y2J was too infatuated with Trish. In the end, Trish turned on Jericho & went with Christian, so awesome. No one thought Trish, everyone’s favorite, would turn heel, but she did & was amazing. It was pretty odd to see Christian making out with Trish, but still, the whole turn was unexpected & that’s all you can ask for. The match was excellent, as it was a no brainer that they’d work well together. That just added to the awesomeness of the whole thing. Now, did Jericho feud with Christian/Trish/Tomko for too long, I think so, but on this night, it was great.
61. Mr. Perfect vs Blue Blazer (WM5) Here’s a little story that only Woodridge Ryan would care about on this board, but in high school, I had a wrestling trivia contest against another student that Ryan put together, who I annihilated (Ryan can attest, as I think this night was the night I earned his respect with my useless wrestling knowledge fully on display). Anyway the final Jeopardy question was what color was Mr. Perfect’s tights at this Wrestlemania? I bet all my points, because I was pressured into it (when I should’ve bet Zero points), but I got it wrong (I thought they were orange, but they were green). That was 12 years ago & it still bugs the fuck out of me. Woodrige can back me up on this, I slaughtered that kid. How’s that for a little story? Anyways, after watching the recent Owen Hart DVD, they showed a match with these two on it, but it made me want to go back to watch this match again & for what many could consider a throwaway match, like you’d see on these early Manias, it was awesome. So much back story they couldn’t talk about since he wasn’t officially Owen Hart. This wasn’t a squash as both guys got in their offense, but in the end, Owen lost to the Perfect Plex. Seriously check this match out it’s my favorite “match that meant nothing” in Mania history, Owen as the Blue Blazer & Mr. Perfect in his GREEN TIGHTS!!!

I felt so bad for you. Hahaha! You'll never forget now. Where's our next ten? I was all set for some Sunday morning reading. He's in a lather outside the Moline house show arena. There's a diva right now saying "I think that guy with the beard grabbed the lower part of my right boob?" It could, or could not, be randomone. But I'm certain that just happened.

Next 10 coming tomorrow. Trying to space them out on Monday & Friday.
Drop In you have no idea how tempted I was to buy a New Day unicorn horn. There's no way it would've fit my fat head though. The image of this bearded dude in a Bullet Club shirt wearing a unicorn horn would've been oddly entertaining to me though.

I just wrote up everything that happened in the WWE to Mania thread, but I waited about an hour before the show started & no one showed up. Then I saw on Twitter that Axel & Rose stopped, that was it. So I'm ok with missing out, I met Rose last time & Axel has read my tweet on the air during the Rumble pre-show. I'm fine with it.
They usually suck at stopping for fans at house shows. Only reason I met as many as I did last time was because it was TV, so full roster & also there were Total Divas cameras there. Also heels don't stop usually, which is why I was surprised about Axel/Rose tonight.
I peaked with Bray Wyatt saying last time "I have to stop for the Bullet Club shirt."

Oh & also, $15 for a phallic shaped unicorn horn that lights up. Just straight up robbery by the WWE.
Shirts are also 30-35 bucks. Ridiculous.

60. Daniel Bryan vs Luke Harper vs Dolph Ziggler vs Dean Ambrose vs R-Truth vs Stardust vs Bad News Barrett (WM31) The build was nothing spectacular, random guy who hasn’t been doing much steals the IC title & essentially is put in this match. By logic sense, Ziggler, Harper, Barrett & maybe Ambrose should’ve been in this match. I was sort of bummed Bryan was put in the opener, but, now knowing that he was pretty injured even at this time, it was safer than say, getting murdered by Brock in the main event. Regardless, these guys went out there & put on one of the better ladder matches we’ve seen in WWE in quite a long time. I’m of course counting TLC matches as well. I really thought Harper/Ziggler had a fantastic Ladder match at TLC in 2014, so that would be the exception. This was a great way to get the crowd pumped as Bryan winning was pretty academic once he was inserted into this match; however the Yes Movement was still in full effect, even if it was the opening match. I still don’t know why they haven’t made Luke Harper into something big in the company, so much potential being wasted in 6 man tags. It sucks because he could legit be a challenger for the IC/US or even World title, but for some reason they just don’t pull the trigger. Ambrose took a sick bump in this match & overall, nothing out of the ordinary, but a strong opening match.
59. Shane McMahon vs Vince McMahon (WM17) This wasn’t a wrestling classic, it was just fantastic storytelling by an old man who couldn’t wrestle for shit & his son who was/is a wild daredevil in the ring. The storyline was perfect, Shane buys WCW from under Vince, simple, yet amazing. “The name on the contract does say McMahon, but the contract reads…SHANE MCMAHON!” is a moment I will never forget in wrestling. It’s just a bummer they really dropped the ball on the entire WCW/ECW angle. But that’s not what this is about, this is about the actual match. Only thing I didn’t care for was the camera panning to WCW wrestlers in the skybox, which they not only looked like ants & nothing special, but it was also Hugh Morrus, Shawn Stasiak, Mike Awesome, Chavo, probably the least impressive lineup you could get for WCW. Anyways, the match was fantastic; Vince beats the shit out of Shane after he misses a wild elbow when Steph moved Vince out of the way. He has Trish, who he’s been scamming on behind (and in front of) his drugged up wife’s back. Places Linda in the ring, only for Linda to get one of the biggest pops of the night & kick Vince in the dick. Mick Foley slaps on the Mandible Claw, Shane hits a Coast to Coast & pins his father. Shane & his mother stand tall over a fallen Vince, while Trish turned on him & chased Steph off. Steph with the fakest fall up the ramp you’ll ever see, but whatever, the crowd was on fire & rightfully so.
58. The Rock vs John Cena (WM28) What was billed as Once in a Lifetime, this year at least, was a year in the making. It was different, I’ll give them credit, however, it took away from anything else Cena did that year. When your Mania match was made 365 days in advance, everything else you do the entire year seems pointless. It also devalues everything else on the Mania card, but that’s just my opinion. People can hate on CM Punk all they want, but he had a point, the fact that the main event was made a year in advance, should make guys who will bust their ass as champion all year sick, because no matter how hard they work, they’re not getting the main event. I digress, this match, no matter the circumstances was infinitely better than their 2nd match because it didn’t seem like a rerun like Mania 29 felt like. Instead, every near fall & false finish was new & fresh, you didn’t know who would win this one actually. Now, when Rock won, you knew damn well Cena needed to get a win back, so it made the following year even more predictable. On this night however, Rock still showed he could hang in the main event & Cena did the job. Dislike him if you choose, but John Cena is a great wrestler in big match situations & this was a good one on one Mania main event, not hampered by interference or shenanigans, just two legendary wrestlers fighting.
57. Undertaker vs Batista (WM23) I’ll be totally honest, I didn’t think Batista could really carry a brand in the WWE, but he did on Smackdown. Some of his best work was with Taker & Edge and this was an awesome back & forth match. Did I think Batista would beat Taker? I was skeptical, because Taker had been wrestling a little less at this point & I thought maybe Batista could be the guy, but then I realized, it’s Taker & Mania, so of course Taker was winning. It’s weird, even though the end result was pretty predictable, the way they got there was the entertaining part. Putting this title match on in the middle of the show I thought worked great, especially because Michaels/Cena was more deserving as a show closer. Undertaker as champion on the Smackdown brand was nothing new, but it led to some seriously great matches with Batista the following months. Batista had improved so much since he first main evented against Trips at Mania 21, so he showed he could hang with Taker.
56. CM Punk vs Shelton Benjamin vs Chris Jericho vs MVP vs Carlito vs Mr. Kennedy vs John Morrison (WM24) Ever since CM Punk was up on the main roster, fans of his (myself included) thought he should’ve been on Raw or Smackdown much earlier than he was. He had good matches in ECW, but it felt like, after a while, his talents were just being wasted. There’s only so many times I can see Punk lose to Chavo Guerrero. Finally, he got the nod winning this match which saw some pretty cool spots. Shelton doing his thing, Carlito with a sick backstabber off the ladder & even Matt Hardy ran in & cost MVP the match with a Twist of Fate off the ladder. It led to Punk getting the briefcase & no matter how silly his first title run was, it was still cool at the time to see Punk raising a briefcase high in the air that guaranteed him a title shot. Then again, the year prior, Kennedy messed up his chance & lost the briefcase, so I was skeptical. Regardless, Punk with the win surprised me at first, because I thought they’d never go with him & finally they did. Kennedy could’ve won it in a rerun of last year, Jericho was the odds on favorite & hell, Morrison could’ve won this thing. However Punk winning made the crowd happy & I was certainly one of them.
55. Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton vs Batista (WM30) Could you imagine the crowd reaction had the main event for Wrestlemania this year actually would have been Orton vs Batista? It’s the same thought I have on this year with Trips & Roman Reigns. Daniel Bryan pretty much saved this entire show single handedly. Take nothing away from some of the other matches on the card, but the opening match was Bryan & they closed the show with Bryan & one of the biggest overall pops in history. The image of everyone chanting YES, Bryan hugging Conor on the outside, it was all amazing & memorable. The match was very good as the only complaint I had was I sort of thought it was unnecessary to do the stretcher job for Bryan & have him come back. On the other hand, they did a sick powerbomb/RKO through a table (which Orton nailed his back on the camera monitor, watch it if you haven’t) spot that led to it, so I guess I’m alright with it. Bryan finally overcame the Authority & for everything they fucked up, no one can take this moment away from Daniel Bryan or the fans. I don’t care how WWE wants to spin it, this wasn’t supposed to happen this year & instead, the fans actually got what they want. Enjoy it while we could, because that was the last time the fans could change a Mania main event.
54. Demolition vs Haku & Andre the Giant (WM6) This was perhaps the biggest pop for any tag team in a long ass time, as Demolition captured the tag titles from the Colossal Connection. This wasn’t a great tag match, but just the energy the fans had during it is truly what makes it memorable & special. Andre was barely in this match, which is sad, but the end result was The Brain & Haku blaming him on the loss, leading to their falling out & Heenan slapping Andre. The image of Andre tossing Heenan & Haku out of the moving ring that brought wrestlers to the arena was memorable in itself, but man, that pop that Ax & Smash got on this night was easily the biggest they ever got. It was your typical Ax & Smash match, except the champs had gotten offense in. Haku worked his ass off & he’s a guy I really think should be in the Hall of Fame soon. Not sure why he hasn’t. Anyways, it’s not a long match, but boy does it get the job done, this is one of those rare occasions where I ranked it this high due to overall enjoyment, not for the wrestling, but for just how much the crowd went ballistic when Demolition won. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.
53. Rick Rude vs Ultimate Warrior (WM5) It’s a rare circumstance to see a heel manager get a win on the biggest show of the year, but that’s exactly what Bobby Heenan & Ravishing Rick did over the Warrior. I think Savage & Rude were the two guys to bring out the best in the Warrior, as of who was the best, I’d say it’s a coin flip, but Rude was amazing at his job, making a guy who wasn’t that good in the ring, look great & he did, every time he fought Warrior. And as usual, Rude bumped his ass off him this one with Warrior tossing him around like a rag doll until, he went to suplex Rude into the ring, but Heenan trips the leg & Rude collapses on Warrior for the 1…2…3!! Rude bailed, but Heenan nearly got killed by Warrior, who pressed him high over his head, only to drop him without a care in the world. Pretty reckless of the Warrior, but that’s how he was in the ring most of the time. Regardless, this was probably feud of the year in 1989 as it dominated the IC title picture almost the whole year. Well done to both guys, but dammit, Rick Rude needs to be in the Hall of Fame already!!
52. Chris Jericho vs Edge (WM26) This was a pretty forgettable feud by Jericho & Edge’s standards, which, goes to show you the caliber of their feuds, however this just seemed forced. Sure, Edge & Jericho were going to be a tag team, but then Edge got injured & we got the awesome Jeri-Show team. When Edge returned in shocking fashion at the Royal Rumble & won, he eliminated Jericho and they were off. Add to that Jericho winning the World title the next month & they have a belt in their program now. I just never seemed to buy into it that these two hated each other. There wasn’t any reason to, as Jericho didn’t struggle while Edge was out, instead he formed a great tag team. What made me rank this match as high as I did was simply, I enjoyed the match. It didn’t help that these two went on after the abomination that was Bret vs Vince, but they still had an excellent 15 minute match that saw Jericho actually retain, which was very surprising at the time. It was always predictable that the Rumble winner would win, but he didn’t, which made it better in a sense. After the match, Edge hit a beautiful Spear from one announce table off another & while it is a forgotten match in these two guys Hall of Fame careers, it’s still, next to Taker/Shawn & Mysterio/Punk, my 3rd favorite match on the show.
51. Diesel vs Shawn Michaels (WM11) Should the title go on last, that’s always been the big question, in this circumstance, I didn’t think it should. Bam Bam vs LT had more heat behind their feud & although HBK would go on to become one of the best ever, his feud with Diesel, while very well booked, wasn’t the main thing people was tuning in for. It was to see a former famous football star in LT take on the Beast from the East. This match was very good, as it certainly gets overlooked because it wasn’t a main event, but also this was a pretty lackluster Mania. Diesel held the title during a tough time in WWE & didn’t have many challengers (aside from Shawn & Bret) during his reign that he had all that good of matches with. Luckily on this night, both dudes did incredible. I think a lot of that had to do with their chemistry outside the ring. You can hate on the kliq all you want, but on this night at least, they put together a great match against each other. Aside from HBK’s nearly landing on his feet after getting flipped up by the Jackknife.

50. Randy Orton vs CM Punk (WM27) This feud between Punk & Orton was awesome, plain & simple. With the exception of the actress who played Randy Orton’s wife (I think different than the one who played her when Triple H broke into Orton’s house a few years prior) who completely overacted her ass off when Punk attacked Randy outside of Orton’s tour bus. Man, Punk was a fantastic dickhead heel & I seriously miss that guy, not just as a wrestler, but a character, love him or hate him, he’s an entertaining dude. Just like this feud, as Orton went on a RKO tour of Nexus, laying everyone out as the stipulation was no one could interfere. I loved that these two got time, as it would’ve been a bummer if they didn’t. 15 minutes was perfect & while the springboard dive countered into a RKO has been done a bunch, at this time, it really hadn’t been yet, so it made it even more awesome. 2nd best match on this Mania card.
49. Kane vs Raven vs Big Show (WM17) Probably the biggest guilty pleasure match of this entire list, as Raven was a Godsend to the Hardcore division. Not since Crash’s start to the 24/7 rule had this title been as entertaining. We got brutal matches from Raven pretty much on a weekly basis & it never grew old. So you have the champ going in against 2 monsters and you’d think you’d get your typical just brawl backstage & that’s it. No, instead we got people thrown through glass windows, tackled through doors & entire walls, ran down by golf carts, slammed through catering tables & finally, a Big Red Machine jumping off the stage through the setup on the floor with an elbow. It was fun, that’s all it was, which, on a card with so much seriousness, it was good to have. All 3 guys did a hell of a job & even though Raven lost the title, it didn’t really matter since everyone had that damn thing anyway. When talking about the Hardcore division, this was probably my favorite of all the matches. It was trainwreck brawling at its finest.
48. Undertaker vs Kane (WM14) I was in 6th grade when Kane & Undertaker began their feud, so I was pretty freaked out when Taker’s younger brother showed up, lighting people on fire, setting caskets on fire, etc. This entire setup was amazing, as Taker thought his brother was dead, but Paul Bearer revealed that Kane was alive. It seemed silly, but for Taker, it was intriguing, it fit the character perfectly & it gave Taker a back story. So when he was reluctant to fight his brother & would just keep getting his ass kicked by Kane, you knew eventually they would finally fight & they did, at Wrestlemania. This is one of those cases where it wasn’t a classic wrestling match, no, it was a fight between brothers & I loved it as a kid & I love it watching it back today. Little did we know that they were just getting started. Sure they have had some stinker revivals of their rivalry (Summerslam 2000 disaster), but they also were able to pick it up 10 years later (their amazing underrated trilogy in 2010 where Kane bested his brother in 3 STRAIGHT PPV MATCHES!). It all started here though as their first battle is always memorable as Taker finally defeated his brother after 3 Tombstone Piledrivers. Let us also not forget Kane became a huge face with the fans prior to this match as this started off his incredible feud with Pete Rose!
47. Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas vs Los Guerreros vs Chris Benoit & Rhyno (WM19) How awesome was the tag division in late 2002/early 2003 on Smackdown? You had guys like Edge/Mysterio, Angle/Benoit, Los Guerreros & Haas/Benjamin all holding the titles & stealing the show nearly every night. Switch Angle with Rhyno & that’s still an awesome team with Benoit. So on this night, these three teams went out there & wrestled their asses off. Even though they didn’t get as much time as they should’ve, at least they didn’t get low balled like Rey & Hardy. Nearly 9 minutes, I’m fine with it, as it made Haas & Benjamin look very good in this one. With all the big time matches on this card, this match is the forgotten little gem out of the bunch & one I definitely suggest watching if you want just plain old awesome WRESTLING.
46. Daniel Bryan vs HHH (WM30) Should we thank CM Punk for walking out of the company? Because had that not happened, it would’ve been him in this match with Trips instead of Daniel Bryan. I think it would’ve been a great match, but I’m glad this match happened. I’m also happy this kicked off Mania, because it’s a rarity these days for a match like this to kick off a show. 26 minute singles match to start off the biggest show of the year, it just seems right. Whether Vince wanted to accept it or not, creative not using Daniel Bryan in the main event picture was a massive mistake & the fans let him know it. So when the opportunity presented itself to right their wrong, I’m happy they took it, because not only was this a great match, it was a great build. Triple H finally giving in to the Yes Movement, Stephanie screeching at her finest & Daniel Bryan defeating The Authority. Everything came together nicely & had it not been for the fans shitting on the product & if Punk wouldn’t have left, we would’ve never have gotten this match, nor the end result in the main event later in the night, thus giving us one of the most memorable final shots in Mania history.
45. Shawn Michaels vs Mr. McMahon (WM22) The Shawn/Vince feud leading up to Mania was great, the feud afterwards, was so stupid. Luckily McMahonism wasn’t a thing yet & Shawn teaming with God wasn’t happening either, so I luckily don’t have to talk about that. I will however talk about how awesome Vince’s matches were when it was pretty much just him getting his ass handed to him. Shawn beat the living crap out of Vince in this one. Of course Vince got some offense in with the help of his son & Spirit Squad, but Shawn came back, put a trashcan on Vince, put him on a table, climbed a super ladder, gave the ol’ Suck It sign (a prelude for what was to come), jumped & put the boss through a table with one of the most awesome visuals in Mania history. Shawn said he was worried because the ladder was a lot bigger than he thought, but I couldn’t imagine this moment being as memorable had he leapt off a small ladder. Big time moment as Shawn defeated the boss & unfortunately that wasn’t in for this feud, when it should’ve been. I absolutely hated the Vince/Shane/Spirit Squad vs DX feud. I take that back, once DX got back together, it was entertaining for about a month, but around month 5 and the Spirit Squad was still jobbing, enough was enough. On this night though, Shawn Michaels stole the show once again & he did it with a somewhat elderly gentleman.
44. Undertaker vs HHH (WM28) Here we are, the 1st of the trilogy between Hunter & Trips and it was their last one, inside Hell in a Cell. After their last battle that saw Undertaker win & literally have to be carted off from being so exhausted, HE wanted another shot at Triple H because he didn’t want that to be a lasting memory. Now THAT is how you build a Mania match, not like Cena/Rock where you build it for a year, you have what happened at the previous year eat away at Taker & want another chance to dispatch of The Game. Unfortunately Trips didn’t want to at first, so he got Shawn Michaels involved, which was fitting since Taker retired Shawn. Look, there was absolutely nothing wrong with this match, except for how long it was. I loved this match, hell it’s 44 on the list, but a match just a little over 30 minutes, just felt a tad too long. The image of Taker/Shawn/Trips standing at the ramp is a chilling visual because it was if this was the final match they could’ve had for the Attitude Era guys. It built up emotion over the match great, used Shawn perfectly & overall it was an excellent match. It’s a testament to these 2 that this is by all accounts, my least favorite of the 3.
43. Undertaker vs Ric Flair (WM18) Sticking with Taker, he made it an even 10-0 at Mania with a win over the unlikeliest of opponents in Ric Flair. No way a year earlier would you expect Taker to wrestle Ric Flair at Wrestlemania. I know Flair has talked about taking a while to get his confidence back, but if he didn’t get it back up to this point, he sure did in this one, as this was the Flair of old, not like the WCW 97-2000 Flair who was just so beaten down by the system that his matches just weren’t the same. Instead we got both guys beating the hell out of one another, Flair bleeding & Arn Anderson with hands down my all time favorite spinebuster in HISTORY as the camera never picked up on him, which was perfect. Instead, Taker hit the ropes & Arn was just there out of nowhere & hit the most beautiful spinebuster ever seen. Undertaker overcoming this made it even more intense as he stood tall over Flair in one hell of a brawl. One of Flair’s best matches in WWF & I’d say Taker’s 6th best Mania match, which is insane to think about.
42. Nasty Boys vs Hart Foundation (WM7) My favorite Tag Team title match not involving a ladder in Wrestlemania history. When you talk about all time greatest tag teams, you’ll have to mention the Hart Foundation, but perhaps the Nasty Boys would be overlooked. They had a reputation of being pretty damn reckless in the ring, but I thought their WWF run was excellent. This was a hard hitting match though as Bret pretty much got the shit beat out of him before Neidhart made the hot tag & Nastys weathered the storm. In the end, like I mentioned with Rick Rude defeating the Ultimate Warrior for the IC title at WM5, this was Jimmy Hart’s finest moment as a manager as they won via shenanigans with the motorcycle helmet & that was it. It was the final PPV appearance for the original Hart Foundation as a duo & the Nastys would move on to the L.O.D. This was the 2nd best match on this Mania card & like I said, my favorite tag match that didn’t involve a ladder.
41. John Cena vs HHH (WM22) Conan the Barbarian vs Al Capone was essentially the entrance theme of this main event & the start of the silly attire that Triple H would become synonymous for over the years. Only redeeming part of this was CM Punk was one of the gangsters on the side of the car that drove to the ring for John Cena, which was pretty cool, but also sad because that would be the closest Punk would get to a Mania main event, which is bullshit. Anyways, the match between John Cena & Triple H on this night was a very well told match, not rushed, not overbooked, perfectly done as 22 minutes was great for these guys who would go on to have awesome matches. Granted I didn’t really care for Triple H around this time, but like I’ve said in earlier rankings, he’s still one of the best ever when he turns it on in the ring. Kicking out of the FU & getting out of the STF was pretty big for the time & Cena began to question what the hell would it take to put this dude away. I’m glad we only got this match once, because I had hear we would’ve gotten it again the next year, but Triple H got hurt, instead we ended up getting one of Cena’s all time best matches ever (we’ll get there). On this night though, Cena showed he could main event a Wrestlemania against one of the all time greats, something he’d get accustomed to as the years went on. Very good match.

First, how haven't I secured this kid a writing job yet? I really am slipping. Second, Benoit paired with Rhyno again reminds us that "the good ol' days" weren't always "the good ol' days." So when random matches are put in place at 32, remember it's not new.

This column is the best thing going for wrestling content three days.
I agree and disagree sir Drop In. The big difference for me is that when different guys would tag I cared more because I cared about the characters. I think, for me, that's a big difference.

It was almost a Hart Foundation feel to Benoit & Rhyno. Benoit was the technical guy who wrestles his ass off, Rhyno comes in as the bulldozer power guy. It was a brief team, but it worked, especially for the Smackdown brand in 2003. Plus I watched Smackdown every week back then because I enjoyed the great matches. So I agree with Ryan in that I cared about the characters more than I do today.
These days I care about seeing about a handful of guys. Back then it was pretty much the entire Smackdown brand.

40. Rey Mysterio vs CM Punk (WM26) The Straight Edge Society was one of the most underutilized factions that the WWE has ever had IMO. You had an amazing heat magnet in CM Punk, who was the messiah, his bodyguard Luke Gallows, who was a solid big man in the ring, Serena, who was different from the prototypical Barbie doll divas that they had & then they’d add Joey Mercury later, who was another fantastic wrestler. It all added up, yet WWE gave up on it way too soon. Luckily they hadn’t yet on this night as Punk & Rey put on one of the most underrated matches I think in Mania history. This match never gets talked about when discussing these two & I think it should. It’s the 2nd best match on the entire show next to Taker/HBK & here’s the kicker, it’s barely 6 friggin minutes. Maybe had Rey’s entrance not gotten screwed up they would’ve had a little more time, but essentially these two had a TV match, just more entertaining, at least to me. Maybe it was the absolute dickhead actions by Punk leading up the match, crashing Rey’s daughter’s birthday party, really made you want to see Rey beat the hell out of Punk. Maybe that really didn’t happen on this night due to time, but still, this is a quick little match that I really liked.
39. Undertaker vs HHH (WM17) The 1st battle of the three & 2nd ranked on the list between Trips & Taker as this was the match that apparently was never supposed to happen. Shawn Michaels was rumored to face Triple H at this show, but Shawn had yet to overcome his demons & was in no shape to get in the ring, so they went with Taker. While that would’ve been cool to see, at that time, no way could Shawn have pulled it off, I don’t care if he is Mr. Wrestlemania or not. It seemed like a pretty forced feud with Taker/Trips, the pushing Taker’s bike off the ramp being the only memorable part about it, but the match itself was pretty damn great. Not to mention this was the night that Lemmy & Motorhead played The Game to the ring in probably my favorite Triple H entrance. Undertaker in his American Badass gimmick I really never liked, but damn did he turn it on here as these two fought around the crowd, even having a great spot in which Taker chokeslammed Trips off some sort of structure. But then the camera shot screwed it up & showed the angle where Triple H bounced off like 12 mattresses, so he was fine. The visual far away was awesome, but leave it to the camera guys to screw it up. That’s the only complaint about this match. The Last Ride counter by Trips with the sledgehammer was awesome & Taker came back to get the win.
38. Chris Jericho vs William Regal (WM17) This feud had everything you could ask for. Brawling, technical wrestling, funny spots, everything you’d want in a feud & it also helped that both guys were two of the best actors in the WWF at this time, so nothing seemed forced, it all felt natural to them. Chris Jericho pissed in Regal’s tea for heaven sake & Regal drank it, that’s just hilarious acting I don’t care who you are. The commitment from both guys in this match is what really made it fun & you could tell both enjoyed working with each other. Regal really hit his stride in the WWF in 2001, everyone he worked with was great & this was no exception. Jericho getting a win here really set the stage for what would be an incredible night for the WWF & it’s one of my all time favorite Mania openers.
37. Randy Orton vs Seth Rollins (WM31) You could say I rated this match way too high, but, I’ve stated my fandom for Seth Rollins, my hometown boy & by all accounts, this was the most entertaining Randy Orton match in a very, VERY long time. The feud for this match was a long time coming. They teased this for an incredibly long time until Orton had enough & went after the golden boy of the Authority. We can complain about the product all we want, but this match was awesome, as this is the Orton that I miss, because in recent years, Orton just seems to be going through the motions. I miss the drive, I miss the passion of Orton in the ring, it just seems like he’s a robot these days. Rollins stole the show IMO with this performance. These two had great chemistry in the ring as the addition of J&J Security on the floor helped add some great moments as well. It was the final spot that is most memorable as instead of doing the typical springboard off the top rope into a RKO, instead we got Rollins going for the curb stomp; Orton essentially launched him off his back & turned it into his finisher. Easily the best match on this entire Mania & rightfully so.
36. Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle (WM22) I’ll preface this ranking by saying that I just watched Wrestlemania 22 less than a week ago, so these matches are still pretty fresh in my mind, so that very well could’ve been why I ranked this match as high as I did. It was just so damn good, despite being absolutely screwed on time. Less than 10 minutes on the biggest show of the year featuring your World Champ, the cocky challenger & the underdog, is an absolute travesty, but to all these guys’ credit, they made it work beautifully. I really wish Rey had gotten a title run under better circumstances, but the death of Eddie Guerrero pretty much gave Rey the chance he never really had in the WWE, which is weird to say. I’m happy Rey got a run & this is one of the more legit emotional moments you’ll see in wrestling, Rey winning the title & celebrating with Vickie and Chavo up at the ramp. Orton played the dick heel amazing, Angle was on a fantastic run as World Champ, but Rey winning was pretty much a fitting end. I just wish these guys had 7-8 more minutes. They definitely deserved it. Then again, I guess Boogeyman vs Booker/Sharmell and the Playboy Pillow Fight needed the time though……..
35. Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels (WM14) A badly injured Shawn Michaels, who had to be probably what, 40% going into this match, still makes number 35, what’s that tell you about Mr. Wrestlemania? I remember when the WWE 24/7 thing aired old episodes of RAW & I wisely made a DX compilation starting from the night they formed all the way until the RAW before this Mania. I watched it a few months ago & it really is amazing just how awesome HBK & Trips were. I also saw how little Shawn wrestled from the start of 98. His back must’ve been in so much pain, yet he made it Mania & dropped the title to Austin who was so over it was ridiculous. Add to all of this, Mike friggin Tyson & you literally can’t mess it up even if you tried. WCW was dead in the water when this happened & this pretty much sealed their fate. This was easily the biggest moment in the WWF up to this point, the passing of the guard. The guy who was the face of the WWF from 96-97 passing the torch to the guy who would dominate the Attitude Era. The match was great, you could see the pain in Shawn’s face, which was heartbreaking (no pun intended), but it went to show you that Shawn Michaels was/is one of the all time greats. While we wouldn’t see the Heartbreak Kid for 5 years, this was the start of the Stone Cold Era & everyone loved it, myself included.
34. Shawn Michaels vs Ric Flair (WM24) My only complaint about any of this, was the Leave the Memories Alone song they had to have played 180 times the night after RAW for Flair’s farewell. Aside from that, this whole thing was a masterpiece. Ric Flair had no business wrestling at his age, at least one would think, but then you remember, he’s Ric F’N Flair & only he could wrestle this kind of match at his age. I choose not to remember his TNA run (minus his interaction with Jay Lethal, which was next level amazing), but this being his final moment to shine inside the ring. He couldn’t have done it with a better final opponent & holy smokes was this a wonderful match. Emotional from before the bell, we all knew Flair was losing, just how much he put into this match was something to behold. Shawn Michaels as well, as he gave everything in this one to make sure his hero went out looking just as good as he did his entire career. The memorable “I’m sorry, I love you” followed by the Sweet Chin Music I’m not lying, gave me goose bumps, it was such an emotional moment & one you never truly thought would happen. My Top 5 wrestlers go Macho Man, HBK, Ric Flair, Bret Hart & Ricky Steamboat. The Nature Boy had memorable matches with all of them, but for his final match to be this incredible, goes to show you just how phenomenal of a wrestler he was, even down the very last match.
33. CM Punk vs Chris Jericho (WM28) Heel Chris Jericho rules, that I think we can all agree on, heel Chris Jericho with a co-main event match at Wrestlemania against the WWE Champ, perfect combo right there. Punk & Jericho matched up so incredibly well that even on their worst night, you would never have known it. Both dudes were/are such pros that watching them wrestle each other was great, but Jericho being the prick heel was played to a tee. The lead up to this match with the alcohol in Punk’s past built the match up, but honestly, even if they didn’t have a strong build, this still would’ve been the match I was looking forward to the most on this card & that includes a Trips/Taker Hell in a Cell. What we got from these two was a highly underappreciated classic as I feel no one talks about it & it’s forgotten about. It was just another title defense for Punk, but I disagree, he had arguably the strongest guy to work in the company at the time & a guy who could really make the crowd hate him. Jericho is incredibly underrated as one of the best heels of our generation. While the silly Jericho babyface is fun in small doses, it simply doesn’t hold a candle to heel Y2J. Same honestly goes for Punk too, his heel work is on another level. Regardless, these two put on a great mix of wrestling/brawling that saw Punk get the win & the crowd be happy that the Best in the World retained his title.
32. Randy Savage vs Ted Dibiase (WM4) As if wrestling 4 opponents in one night wasn’t impressive enough, Randy Savage did it against 4 different style of opponents. Butch Reed was the bruiser, Greg Valentine was the workhorse, One Man Gang was the big man & to cap it off, Ted Dibiase the technician. Everything came together perfectly for Savage this night. Different opponent, different gear, different dress for Elizabeth every time out, I remember seeing this on VHS as a kid & just thought, damn, how cool is this guy? Even as a young kid though, I didn’t like Hulk Hogan sharing the spotlight with Savage. I mean, chase Virgil & Andre to the back & let Savage get the win on his own, just like he did the other 3 matches! Regardless, this was just about 10 minutes, which, you might see as a little short, but you have to think, this was match 16 on this card, so it was plenty of time. One of the most memorable images is when Savage hoisted Elizabeth on his shoulder & she’s holding the title. The first couple in the WWF & the first manager/valet duo I really was fans of, hell, I’ve talked about how Savage was my #1 all time favorite & this is one of his finest moments. We’ll get to what I consider his finest moment later, MUCH later.
31. Undertaker vs HHH (WM27) The 2nd match of the Trips/Taker trilogy & my favorite of all of them. To be honest, I didn’t really care for how they set it up at first, but over time, I realized how special it was. They had been airing these 2.21.11 promos that were super cryptic & many thought Sting was coming. It was so different that many thought there was no way this would just be The Undertaker, but that’s who it was & I was somewhat let down at first. However Taker comes out & is about to talk, when Triple H returns & they have a long staredown without any words spoken. Instead they both looked up at the Mania sign & that was it. So I didn’t really know what to make of it. Over time I liked it more & finally the match itself, friggin fantastic. I honestly think their other 2 matches don’t hold a candle to this one as there wasn’t any stipulations, instead it was just two legends kicking each other’s asses for nearly a half hour. Triple H loses the match, but he was the one able to walk away, while Undertaker was carted out. It was different from anything we had seen from Undertaker matches & that’s what makes it so special.

30. Edge vs Chris Jericho vs Shelton Benjamin vs Chris Benoit vs Christian vs Kane (WM21) I guess in the case of the Money in the Bank (solid pun), you can’t beat the original. A completely new concept at the time, not one knew what to expect from a 6 man ladder match for a shot at the WWE title. This has since obviously become a staple in WWE, but no one knew what would happen & luckily, it was great! Shelton Benjamin had the spot of the match, scaling the ladder & leaping off to the floor. You have to remember though, we hadn’t seen all the crazy MITB spots yet, so that one was incredible. Edge winning was perfect, it had just come out that he had been having a love affair with Lita, so that just added to the fans dislike of him. I guess my favorite part about this match was look at the 6 guys, all of them were in some way involved in the World title picture, or the very least, wrestling top level guys, so it was anyone’s game. Benoit going for a headbutt off the top of the ladder was sick, Edge beating the hell out of him & finally grabbing the briefcase, you knew they had something special here. This one gets forgotten about since everyone has raised the bar so damn high, but it all goes back to the original, set the stage for what would be a pretty memorable match each year for the WWE.
29. Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage (WM5) It seems like a broken record, but I looked & the last 2 matches of Hulk Hogan’s, I won’t bitch about him being an egomaniac. This will be the final time, so bare with me. How in the hell was Hulk Hogan perceived as the good guy in this feud? Since pretty much Wrestlemania 4, Hogan was touching Elizabeth, raising her high in the air, hugging her, everything except kissing the poor lady & the kicker, he did it RIGHT IN FRONT OF SAVAGE!! What in the hell did you expect Savage to do, give Hogan a hug? The man could only do the Mega Powers handshake so much before letting out his anger on the guy scamming on his lady. I was all for Savage beating the hell out of Hogan. Of course, you can’t have Hogan without the belt longer than a year (I think it’s a miracle looking back he was able to not have the title for that long), but really, for the first time in Mania history, Hogan had someone that put on one hell of a match. Instead of Bundy or Andre, he had the best in ring wrestler IMO in Savage, who was known for having every precise detail down in his matches. Might seem a little overkill, but look back at his matches, they’re incredible. Anyways, Hogan defeats Savage with the combo of doom & that was that, a very good match, but Savage was absolutely justified, yet he was forced to play the heel. Why? Because it’s 1988 & Terry doesn’t play heel, brother!
28. Eddie Guerrero vs Kurt Angle (WM20) Eddie Guerrero beating Brock Lesnar a month prior was a shock to me because I never thought they’d go with Eddie, once they did, I loved it. Having Eddie vs Angle on the biggest show of the year, I couldn’t wait. These two fought each other a few times on Smackdown, but really more in tag team matches, so the fact that they got time & it’s for the brands top title, you knew it would be great & it was. Eddie really started living the Lying, Cheating, Stealing gimmick as the finish to this match was typical Eddie, clever as hell & retaining the title by slipping out of an Ankle Lock with his shoe off & get the pin on Kurt. It kept the feud alive when they had Kurt come back from injury, which, for the 2nd year in a row, he took time off after Mania, but not after putting on a fantastic match. I really enjoyed Eddie as WWE Champ, wish it would’ve lasted longer, but I guess they felt the need to take the title off him sooner than later, which is a bummer. Regardless, Eddie had his Mania moment & it was an awesome one & had it not been for the RAW main event, it would’ve been the best match on the card.
27. Chris Jericho vs Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit (WM16) For all these guys’ first Mania, they came out swinging. WWF fans knew they had 3 stars on their hands when this match took place as within 6 months, Kurt Angle became IC & European champion, so when both Jericho & Benoit were coming after his titles, it was a dream match. Perhaps the best part about this whole thing was Angle wasn’t pinned or submitted to lose either title. So it kept him strong, despite losing 2 titles in one night. With the main event dominated by Trips/Rock, a guy like Benoit could wrestle those guys when needed, but him holding the IC title was good for the time as he & Jericho would have great matches, something we rarely saw in WCW. Jericho winning the European title didn’t last long & holding that title never really made sense, but it made the end result of Angle staying undefeated more logical. I did like how Benoit got the pin on Jericho after tossing Angle into the front row, allowing him time to hit the headbutt to win the IC title. We’d get classics from all 3 of these guys over the next few years & this was the start of it all. 3 all time great wrestlers in a very good triple threat.
26. Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero (WM21) One of the best openers in Mania history, almost the best, but certainly in the Top 2 best matches on this card as Eddie & Rey were tag team champions, yet they were going to square off here. I know I’ve complained a bunch about how certain matches don’t get a ton of time, but this one didn’t get too much time, probably could’ve gone 7-8 more minutes, but, this was perfect for an opener. You don’t want a long opener, no matter how much you enjoy the competitors. This really put the wheels in motion for heel Latino Heat to return, so this was the catalyst as both men damn near stole the show in the opener! It was a match that absolutely got the crowd hot from the very start. You want great wrestling; look no further than these two as with the exception of maybe a couple times, Eddie & Rey really never faced each other in singles matches in the WWE. Being a fan of their Halloween Havoc classic in 97, no one should’ve been surprised they put on such an amazing high flying, back & forth battle. This is probably in my Top 3 Rey matches in WWE & maybe Top 5 for Eddie, I say that because I was a bigger Eddie fan than Rey, but something about these two, they knew each other so well, you knew they were going to go all out & they did. One of those rare occasions where I’m more than happy we didn’t just get a tag match with these two & instead saw them fight.
25. Triple H vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Benoit (WM20) It really sucks what happened with Benoit, because this match is seemingly erased from video packages, highlights, anything involving talk about Trips & Shawn’s Mania history. If they do briefly mention it, it’s always looked at as a singles match. I remember there was a Topps card highlighting this match & all it said was something along the lines of “Shawn Michaels & Triple H compete in a Triple Threat Match”. Let’s put all the tragedy aside, like we’ve done with all the Benoit matches previously. This match, was absolutely incredible & honestly, I think its Triple H’s best Mania match. The story heading into this with Benoit not able to win the big one was something they had done similar a few years prior with Chris Jericho, but with this one, coming off winning the Royal Rumble at #1, Benoit’s story was much better & intriguing. Everyone thought we’d get possibly Brock vs Benoit at Mania, which would’ve been awesome, then Eddie won the title & holy smokes could you imagine Eddie vs Benoit for the title? Instead, we got something what proved to be even better, Benoit showing up on RAW & injecting some serious life into Triple H vs Shawn Michaels. Love watching those two wrestle, but even in the early stages of 2004, it seems they wrestled a ton (and they would continue to do so all of this year, wrestling against each other on so many PPVS). Benoit was the perfect boost this feud needed & the match was fantastic. Could Benoit win it? Could Trips squeak out another shenanigan filled win? Could HBK get his moment & ultimate revenge against Trips? It was anyone’s game & ultimately, no matter how hard WWE tries to ignore it, Benoit had the biggest moment of his wrestling career, winning the big one & the crowd went nuts.
24. Edge vs Mick Foley (WM22) So, I love this match. The fact that Mick Foley wasn’t supposed to wrestle much & his health wasn’t all that great, even adds to just how insane Mick is as a wrestler & performer. This isn’t a slight on either man, but I simply don’t remember anything about the leadup to this match, I just remember the match itself & literally nearly everything about the match I remember even without watching it for quite a while. Mick wrapping himself in barbed wire before he even came to the ring, wrestling a few minutes before revealing it was around him, that’s some sick shit right there. Wrapping Socko in barbed wire & putting it on Lita, which caused her mouth to bleed. Add to that barbed wire baseball bat to the head of Edge, thumbtacks, both men badly busted open & finally the end spot, Edge spearing Foley through a table set on fire. One of the most memorable moments in Wrestlemania history. Mick got his Mania moment, no matter how painful it was. He did it & it was absolutely breathtaking. He sacrificed his body for this business & one of his biggest bumps was on the biggest show of the year. I remember meeting Mick Foley a few years ago & was so nervous because honestly, he’s one of my all time favorites. His story is incredible, just like this match. Edge was already a previous World champ, but I really think this was the night everyone looked at him like wow, this dude can really hang. The looks on his face after pinning him, the blood pouring into his eye, it’s chilling, but memorable.
23. John Cena vs Shawn Michaels (WM23) The match that wasn’t originally supposed to happen. Thanks to a Triple H quad tear, we were lucky enough to get HBK vs Cena in the main event of Wrestlemania. Any doubters still out there about John Cena were forced to shut up as on this night, he showed he could hang with the absolute best. Say what you want about Cena now, but back in 2007, Cena turned it on (he still does) in big match situations & none were bigger than this. I’m really happy we didn’t get Trips/Cena 2, because we would’ve possibly never have gotten this. Michaels main eventing a Wrestlemania in a singles match, the first since 1998. An amazing story & an even better match. Granted, if you are going to watch a match between these two, I’d absolutely pick their almost 60 minute match on RAW a few weeks later. No one saw that coming, but I think had they not discovered just how well they worked with each other at Mania, we would’ve never gotten that match. The counters, the kick-outs, the finish, everything was great in this one. My all time favorite John Cena Wrestlemania match, which is saying something, since he’s been in a whole bunch, but it also speaks to the caliber of Shawn Michaels that this is his 7th best Mania match in my opinion. We’ll get there, as HBK dominates the rest of this list. But after winning the WWE title in 2005, John Cena has now main evented Mania's against both Triple H & HBK and looked great doing so. Looking back at this time, you can tell that Cena was the real deal.
22. Undertaker vs Edge (WM24) Edge did everything he could to retain his title the months leading up to Mania, even hooking up with Vickie Guerrero. Everyone thought Edge was a scumbag of a character & this fit it perfectly as he was willing to do anything (and in this case, anyone) to keep his title. Enter The Undertaker, who was about to put a stop to all of that. I liked the La Familia faction during 2008. Edge as the kingpin, Chavo as the jester, Bam Neely as the green muscle & Hawkins and Ryder as the lackeys who could wrestle. It all oddly fit together & Taker going through them made it pretty cool to see. Chokeslamming Hawkins & Ryder, essentially taking out the family until it was only Edge. This match absolutely deserved to be the main event as Taker & Edge had the best match on the card, easily. This is one of the cases where I couldn’t wait for this feud to continue, which it did. These two worked tremendously together as I was fine with Taker winning the title here. The streak was big at the time & Edge had moments in this one where you thought, maybe he could really do it. I heard rumors of him possibly beating Taker, but I’m happy they didn’t. It was a pretty great ending to a phenomenal main event. Undertaker for another year, winning the World title. While some might think that’s repetitive, with Taker, it’s absolutely acceptable.
21. Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper (WM8) It almost hurt me to list this match just missing the Top 20, because this is my all time favorite Roddy Piper match & one of my I’d say Top 5 Bret matches as well. It was different seeing a face vs face for a title at a Wrestlemania, but with the exception of subtle jabs they’d take at one another in the promos leading up, we didn’t have a certain good guy to cheer for. Pre-match promo got super intense, which talked about Piper’s days at the Dungeon, whether there was 100% legitimacy to that I don’t know, but I do know it was entertaining to listen to. Anyways, the match, dammit the blood in this one made it so much better, even if Bret did gush a ton. I know Vince was totally against blood at this time, but it brought so much more to it. Granted they did it a few matches later, but I’ll get to that. In this match though, it felt like another obstacle Bret had to overcome to win the title. Piper was going to waffle him with a ring bell, showing signs of his old heel Hot Rod, but he realized he was a good guy & slapped on the sleeper, the move he originally won the title with. Instead of passing out, Bret had one of the prettiest counters & kicked off the ropes with Piper stuck in his own hold, pinning him. Both guys shook hands after some hesitation by Piper with the title in what was an amazing moment (and Bobby Heenan begging for Piper to waffle Bret with the title, which was equally amazing). One of the best Intercontinental title matches in Mania history.

So good. Love how much love you gave to that roddy-hart match. Wasn't the best wrestlemania in the world but there were two outstanding matches in that show.

We're getting down to the nitty-gritty fellas. It bummed me out I had to leave some of these out of the Top 10, but I had to. I'll be posting the Top 10 starting on Saturday. I'll post one a day, leading up until Mania, which I will post the final 2. Build some anticipation. Anyways, here we go!
20. Undertaker vs CM Punk (WM29) I really had to flip a coin between this & the last match because they’re just so good. I went with Taker/Punk solely for the fact that it had a great feud building up this match. It’s absolutely heartbreaking that Paul Bearer had passed away and I know that many thought using his name in this feud was distasteful, however, the family of Paul Bearer gave their blessing & you know damn well Undertaker would’ve done nothing that would’ve ruined the legacy of one of his closest friends in the business. So CM Punk playing hot potato with the urn & then pouring the ashes onto Undertaker was exactly the kind of dastardly actions a monster heel like Punk needed to do. People wanted to see Undertaker destroy Punk & it was one hell of a match as this was so back & forth over the entire time, which made it even better. This match blew every other match out of the water. Punk hitting a GTS, covering Taker like the dead man usually does, only for Taker to kick out. Then you had the counter to the Last Ride with the shot to the head with the urn. Finally you had Punk leaping from the top to the floor with the elbow & the table didn’t break. This match was brutal in the best way possible as Taker showed he still had what it takes & Punk showed at this point an argument certainly could be made that he was, in fact, the best in the world. This is one of my favorite Punk matches & my favorite Undertaker Mania match when his opponent isn’t named Shawn Michaels.
19. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle (WM19) The match where Brock Lesnar nearly killed himself. You have to think, had Brock Lesnar had such a massive neck, he would’ve possibly suffered a broken neck had he been a smaller dude. Luckily for Brock, he’s built like a brick shit house. Aside from that spot, which is memorable for all the wrong reasons, this was the match that WWE built up masterfully for months. Since around December 2002, we didn’t have much interaction between these two, once Brock started coming for the title, Kurt did everything he could to duck Brock, including the appearance of Eric Angle, the twin brother of Kurt. They also brought in Benjamin & Haas as Team Angle, more hoops for Brock to jump through, or in his case, steamroll over. After all of this, I should mention, as most of you know, Kurt wasn’t in great physical health during this one, which, like I’ve mentioned back with Mick Foley in the Edge match, it’s just amazing how these guys are so hurt, but turn it up to another level when Mania rolls around. Its things like that which is amazing about wrestlers. Anyways, back to the match, 20 plus minutes of suplexes, great wrestling, you name it. It wasn’t hampered with interference or shenanigans, instead, they had built for this match for months & this was the big time pay off. It’s such a bullshit reason I know, but the ending with the botch Shooting Star & the unsettling image of an unconscious on his feet Brock struggling to pick up an equally out of it Angle with a F5 for the finish. It’s an incredible match, but it really makes you cringe watching the final minute or two. Not because it’s bad, but because you know just how injured these two were.
18. Steve Austin vs The Rock (WM15) Stone Cold vs Vince McMahon was the biggest feud in WWF history, there’s no question. During the height of the Attitude Era, with the corrupt boss vs the beer drinking badass, the money was rolling in, the viewers were watching every week, this was the biggest feud, I don’t care what you say. So the kingpin of the Corporation, the Corporate Champion, The Rock, whose heel turn was masterfully done as they sacrificed just how over he was to get themselves a main event heel at Survivor Series 98. On that night, you knew Austin & Rock were on a collision course & add to that the amazing storyline leading up, forget about it, it’s amazing. Beer bath for Vince, Shane & The Rock? One of the most memorable images ever, Vince swimming. The match itself though, had too many bells & whistles to it. Just let Rock & Austin go out there & do their thing. I didn’t think we need Mankind as referee. If anything, the image of Austin standing over Vince was the only other involvement we needed. This match pretty much the final nail in the coffin for WCW. Sure they stayed in business about 2 years more, but it’d never be close. Austin & Rock were the two biggest stars in the Attitude Era, duh, but honestly, this match doesn’t hold a candle to the 2nd match in their Mania trilogy. We’ll get there. On this night however, good triumphed over evil & it couldn’t have happened at a better place and time.
17. Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit (WM17) This match is probably the highest ranked match that had pretty much zero build, at least not much of one. The year prior these two had more of a build than this one. Instead, we got two of the best wrestlers in the world (arguably THE best at the time) in a match not having anything to do with titles, but instead just who’s the better wrestler. I’m not sure this was always the plan to go with Benoit/Angle, but if it wasn’t, they picked a hell of a time to fall into it. The fact that these two guys barely wrestled one another in singles matches up to this point is sort of baffling. Also, despite being ranked number 17, this is still just the 3rd best match on this card, which goes to tell you how amazing this Mania was. Nearly 15 minutes of just wrestling, no interference, no shenanigans, just wrestling at its finest. To think Angle had been in the WWF less than 2 years is ridiculous, he was on a whole other level. Benoit had done nothing but put on great matches since coming in from WCW, so this was a perfect match from every account. If you want great wrestling with no bells or whistles, this is the one I suggest.
16. Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan (WM6) If you’ve read through all my ramblings in this list, you’ll know, not a Hogan fan, so you’d assume him losing the WWF title should’ve been my #1 pick, right? When I saw this as a kid, I didn’t think much of it; this was just another WWF VHS that I rented from Blockbuster. Watching it as I got older, I realized just how huge of an event this was. Not that Warrior won, but that Hogan actually lost, he got pinned, cleaned, by another wrestler. Say what you want about Hulkamania, but Hulk Hogan, with the exception of getting beaten down leading to a hiatus, rarely ever put anyone over in the late 80s time period. He was the face of the company, so he’d never lose & if he did, it was by a crooked referee or other BS. On this night, it was a passing of the torch, but not entirely. Hogan still tried to make it a little bit about him, acting all the way to the back as Warrior celebrated. After all that however, I will give not only Warrior, but Hogan his just due, this match was fantastic & that shocked the hell out of me watching it more times as I got older. Warrior, up to this point, really had only had good matches with Rick Rude, everything else wasn’t good. Hogan could turn it on when he wanted & luckily this night was one of them. You could say this match had no business being as good as it was, but it just showed that both men were capable of such a match, it sucks that we rarely saw it.
15. Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho (WM19) I’ve read a lot of people saying that Brock vs Kurt was a better match than this one & I think I ranked it as high as I did in part because HBK is my 2nd all time favorite wrestler (next to Macho Man) and Jericho is firmly in the Top 15. Add to that this build was absolutely incredible, for months Jericho said he was better than Michaels, even making himself the number 1 entrant in the Royal Rumble. He bloodied HBK in that match, then these two had such a great build over the next few months, showing the similarities in both men’s looks growing up, skills in the ring, everything was so similar. Jericho played the scumbag heel to a tee, while Michaels’ comeback story was even more special because no one could believe he was wrestling at Wrestlemania for the first time since 1998. The story told in the match was even better as Jericho mocked Michaels’ signature moves & poses, but after over 22 minutes of action, Michaels got a flash roll up for the victory. Both men hugging afterward was quite the image, but Jericho hitting a low blow on HBK & Shawn literally crumbling at the feet of Jericho is the most memorable shot of this entire match. From top to bottom, everything about this match was just great.
14. Edge & Christian vs The Hardys vs The Dudleys (WM16) No Mercy 99 was the coming out party for Edge, Christian & The Hardy Boyz as they competed in the first tag team ladder match in the Terri Invitational Tournament (the glorious T.I.T.). That got these two teams noticed, so when The Dudley Boyz started to get into the mix, everything came together & all 6 were ready to steal the show on this night & they did. Triple Ladder match for the Tag Team titles, it showed the WWF fans that this was the new breed of tag teams & that’s something this division desperately needed. Unfortunately for these guys though, this sort of set the standard for ladder matches going forward, which obviously couldn’t have done wonders on their bodies, but dammit was it some entertaining matches. The amount of table bumps, ladder shots, you name it, every time someone remotely hit a big move, the crowd was on their feet. Jeff Hardy leaping off a ridiculously tall ladder onto Bubba through a table in the entranceway is a memorable image, the end with Matt getting tossed off the makeshift table walkway they built, through a table below, was such a clever ending & the conclusion with Edge and Christian of all teams, the team no one saw winning it, holding the titles high, was the beginning of a historic tag team run by E&C. Everyone was a superstar in this match, there were no weak links & it would only get bigger & better as we would move on. The days of the Outlaws & LOD 2000 were long gone & this was the new face of the tag division in the WWF & everyone was for the better because of it.
13. Bret Hart vs Owen Hart (WM10) After reading Bret’s book, finding out that not only was the original plan that Vince pitched was for Bruce Hart to feud with Bret & not Owen. Could you imagine that? He also wanted Bruce to beat Owen handedly to lead to their match. Thank God that Bret voiced that it should be Owen instead of Bruce. Because as much as I was a fan of Bret Hart, I don’t think he could’ve gotten a good match out of Bruce, without Bruce going into business for himself. Why Vince didn’t have more faith in Owen is beyond me, but on this night, Owen shut up the detractors in a major way. Not only was this the night Bret Hart really became WWE’s go to guy, it was also the night that the wheels officially fell off the Lex Express once & for all. So having Bret lose here was a giant risk, but it made the months to follow even better. Bret had been a main event player already, so Owen winning was huge, the biggest win in his career. The way he won was great, the way Bret won the title later in the night was great & the staredown between Owen & Bret to end the PPV was great. It didn’t hurt that these two put on one of the absolute best wrestling matches we’d seen. This is easily the greatest opener in Wrestlemania history (by a landslide), it was maybe Owen’s best match ever & easily in Bret’s Top 10. The setup from Survivor Series, heel turn at the Rumble (where Owen kicked Bret’s leg out of his leg), promos to follow & then the match itself. There’s nothing more you could’ve asked for.
12. Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels (WM26) Re-watching both HBK & Taker matches recently, back to back, I realized that I really enjoyed this match (obviously, it’s ranked 12) but it didn’t have that Top 10 all time feel to it like the other one did. Yes, this is Shawn Michaels final match ever, which sucks because he could still have one more Mania moment to this day. I’ll save my thoughts on their 25 match, but without that one, perhaps maybe this one would be higher. However, this pains me to say, the bar was raised so damn high for their 1st match, there was seemingly no way to top it. That all said, this match was spectacular. The fact that Michaels & Taker, for the 2nd year in a row, put on an epic, especially as 2 of the oldest guys on the roster, shows just how much they had left in the tank. The streak was bigger than the World title, HBK’s career was bigger than the streak, so the fact that both of these men had something so precious on the line, made this match so special. It wasn’t bogged down with garbage interference, it wasn’t overbooked with 87 kick outs, instead, we did get kick outs, but they were at moments in the match that pulled at the fans emotions. They didn’t want to see HBK go, he had been putting on some of the best matches of his career in recent years & to even fathom that HBK was calling it a career, it was, for lack of a better term, heartbreaking. The Undertaker stood tall, but not without a fight from HBK, who thought he had cracked the code, but, for another year, Undertaker proved to be absolutely unstoppable at Wrestlemania. There was absolutely no one who HBK could’ve had his final match with other than Taker. Words can’t begin to describe how happy I was that it wasn’t Triple H vs HBK in his last match, as we had that match like 100 times over the past 5 years. Instead, we got a rematch of one of my all time favorite matches & while this match didn’t live up to the first, no match could. Instead what we got was a farewell match to one of the all time greats (my 2nd all time favorite, as I’ve mentioned a ton in this list), retired by arguably the most respected wrestler in the history of the business. Fitting send off for the Heartbreak Kid.
11. Randy Savage vs The Ultimate Warrior (WM7) I added more pictures to this one because there were so damn many good moments. The fact that I had to move this one out of the Top 10 is a little heartbreaking, but it is what it is. This was one of my all time favorite feuds. From Warrior winning the title, Sherri trying to seduce him to get Savage a title shot, Warrior rejecting, Savage costing Warrior the title, the buildup wasn’t overly done, instead it was a master at his craft, Randy Savage, taking on one of the most popular wrestlers in quite a while, the Ultimate Warrior. Remember what I said, Warrior could have great matches with very few, Macho was one of them & he was the best. This was THE best Ultimate Warrior match perhaps only rivaled by Savage/Warrior from Summerslam, but this one had so much emotion from the competitors involved, to the fans in the arena. Including those fans, Miss Elizabeth, seated suspiciously close to the action, perhaps to get a look at the demise of the man who kicked her to the curb for the Sensational Queen? Instead, what we got was Warrior kicking out of 5 Top Rope Elbow Drops & he got up & hit 3 shoulder tackles on Savage putting his foot on him to end his career (at the time). It was perfectly done, even right up to the way Warrior pinned him. These days everyone kicks out of each other’s finishes, but this was a night way before its time. Post match more emotional as the actual match as Elizabeth hopped the rail to stop Sherri from kicking Savage. What we got was a reunion for the ages & yes I realize how friggin cheesy that sounds, but this was WWF’s equivalent to Sam & Diane, Ross & Rachel, Jim & Pam. Yeah, I just compared Savage & Elizabeth to beloved TV couples, shut up, it’s my list! Anyways, to ease some of the waterworks, a disgusted Bobby Heenan mocked it in the perfect opportunity. The career of the Macho King was officially over, but it was the rebirth of the Macho Man & the 1st lady by his side. In terms of actual feuds, this ranks in my Top 5, but I just love certain matches more, as much as it pains me to say that.

Owen was so good throughout this feud and through that year after the Mania match. It pisses me off we didn't get Owen vs Bret for the title to main event the next mania.

I agree & I would've been more than happy with them wrestling each other at Mania 11 again. Even if it wasn't the main event. Owen vs Bret in a submission match would've been infinitely better than Bret vs Backlund, who no one wanted to see yet again.
Owen could've won the title at Summerslam with help from Anvil. Then Bret could've won it back a month or so later on a RAW or something. They could've built up a TV main event for the title. Then still get to Backlund/Bret if they wanted, since they had so much time between Summerslam & Survivor Series.
To think Bruce almost wrestled Bret though & not Owen. Kinda scary.

This list is about to get controversial. Six matches standout in my mind you don't have in here yet. Don't believe one belongs but I get why. Very interested to read this list shake out...

Oddly enough, 10-6 I'm having more hard of time ranking than 5-1. I re-watched 5-1 this past weekend & those are set in stone.
Definitely look forward to your thoughts.

One a day from now until next Sunday when I'll post #2 & #1! Home stretch, lets go!!!
10. The Rock vs Hollywood Hogan (WM18) Here we are, the Top 10, Good Lord, thanks for sticking this out, but we’ve made it! I’m going to be completely honest; I should’ve ranked Warrior/Savage above this one. I re-watched Hogan/Rock recently and I liked Savage/Warrior better. So make that little switch in your non-existent notes of this whole thing, anyways, this match still is incredible, so let’s get to it. Who the hell knew in 2002 that Hulk Hogan was primed to have some of his best matches in his career? He hadn’t had a great wrestling match in years, since maybe 95-96? That might be generous. I can’t remember great matches involving Hogan in WCW (maybe the Goldberg Nitro match, but that’s really it, everything else was ok). So it was a legit shock when this became one of my Top 10 (or Top 11) favorite matches in Mania history. I remember watching this live on PPV in high school & was in awe witnessing the crowd turn on The Rock & side with Hogan fairly early in the match. This wasn’t red & yellow Hogan, this was NWO Hollywood Hogan, who leading up to this, ran over Rock locked in an ambulance, with a semi truck. So the match went on in the middle of the show, which is probably the biggest amount of bullshit about this whole thing, because, even if you couldn’t imagine the crowd turning, it’s The Rock vs Hollywood Hogan, two of the biggest icons in the business, I don’t care what anyone says, in that instance, the title doesn’t need to go on last. This show ending with The Rock & Hogan shaking hands, the ultimate sign of respect, Hogan losing to Rock, is the ultimate old school putting over, well, the new school I guess, though Rock was just about to leave again, but you get what I mean. The Hollywood Hogan run in the WWF didn’t last long & it shouldn’t have in this case, as the crowd wanted to cheer Hogan, not hate him & on this night, they did. It was an amazing moment & amazing match, which was only less than 15 minutes, but it was perfect, it didn’t drag on, it was the perfect time for it. Like I said before, the image of Hogan & Rock fighting off Hall & Nash, only for Hogan to stand tall with The Great One and end Wrestlemania in a signature pose down, I mean, that’s a conclusion for the ages, but instead, we got it halfway through the show. It was overkill with Hogan ending nearly every damn Wrestlemania from 1-9 with a posedown, but almost 10 years later, it was the breather we needed, so it was welcome on this show.

I may have screamed like a school girl over this match. I stood for at least half the match. To your point, what a fun Hogan run with matches against Rock, Triple H, Undertaker, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho and Brock Lesnar. It was one hell of a comeback run.
Later on we'd get the HBK match which from an entertainment stand point was hilariously fun. His match with Randy Orton wasn't bad either from what I remember.

You could tell during the 02 run that Hogan was all about having fun & honestly helping out others. His match with HBK was ok, but Shawn did everything to build it, Hogan just came in & beat him, which was ridiculous. Michaels selling of the big boot remains one of my favorite things ever though. It was such a slap in the face to Hogan, then again, so was demanding to win against HBK.
Don't get me started on Orton having to lose. That was full Hogan Knows Best ego version of Hulk in that one.
Loved this 02 run though. King of the Ring match with Angle I remember being really good. Watch that if you haven't.

The loudest and longest ovation in my life, Hulk Hogan at the Peoria Civic Center in 2002. He opened Smackdown as the newly crowned WWE champion. At least ten minutes non stop hogan chants. The had to dramatically edit down how long it was. Incredible moment. Hogan did everything right in 2002 in the ring.

9. Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart (WM12) What many consider to be the greatest Mania match in history, still cracks my Top 10, but in my honest opinion, there are others better than this. I’ve said that Shawn & Bret are in my Top 5 all time favorite wrestlers list, so you would assume that it would be higher, especially considering that they wrestled just a little over an hour. However, while this match showed two of the absolute best, in their primes, there were LONG stretches where everything slowed down. Rest holds aplenty. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting these two to go 100 mph for 60 minutes, but the others I have listed above it had not only the incredible match quality, but it also had the emotion that makes matches so memorable. There were some great emotion showed by Shawn & Bret during this match, some incredible moves & spots (young Tony Chimel getting superkicked in the chops), but I just liked the other matches better, which we’ll get to. Now that I’ve explained my reasoning for this to be at 9, let’s get to the build & the match. Bret Hart was the leader of the post-Hogan period until the golden boy Shawn Michaels’ time had come to step up & be the face of the company. I know that’s something that Bret never liked, but Shawn as the face of the company was something Vince was set on & the fans loved Shawn, so this was the best thing to do. Having both men not get a fall the entire match was actually pretty good, as it showed that no matter what the other threw at their opponent, it wasn’t enough. However, once Shawn finally hit the Sweet Chin Music in overtime, which was the final nail in the coffin. This is probably one of the more controversial feuds in wrestling history & depending on who you ask will let you determine whether everything was a shoot or not. Word was that there was supposed to be a rematch the following year, but Shawn lost his smile & Bret never got his win back. Then there’s the story of Shawn supposedly saying to the referee to tell Bret to get out of his ring after he won the title. It was strange, but intriguing booking. Was things supposed to be different or did Shawn & Bret simply just book themselves into a shoot? Regardless of personal feelings for one another, it didn’t affect this match. It was something in which we had never seen before, especially on a big stage like Wrestlemania. Shawn coming down from the rafters, everything was larger than life. The match was fantastic, but a very slow pace, which, I’m fine with, it’s just these others hold a more special place to me.
