womens division is loaded for years to come. I liked the match. Wasn't the best of the tournament, but I liked it.
I think they'll have another one next year.
And now 205 Live......who cares.

I watched Swann vs TJP. It was a really great match, but there's no one there to care, which is unfortunate.
Now Drew Gulak is out, who Nigel called Drew Gallagher. I'm done. Like you Gulak, but I'm done.
EDIT: THE FASHION POLICE INTERRUPT GULAK!!!
And you've lured me back 205 Live!!

Kairi Sane will challenge for the NXT Women's Title at Takeover Houston on November 18th.
Not announced who she will be facing yet, but I'm sure they'll explain it in the next TV tapings.
I like it.

Just coming to post it. Gotta be Ember Moon right? Maybe a multi woman match?

It'd certainly make the most sense. I hope they don't do a tournament to decide it though. I think there should be a multiple woman match for the spot.
I'd have Ruby vs Ember vs Billie vs Peyton vs Nikki (she hasn't been used much in a wrestling role lately, so Fatal 4 Way could make sense)
Ruby is supposed to find a partner to tag with against Billie & Peyton, so Ember could be her partner & they could work a 4 Way out of that.
Apparently ProWrestlingSheet said it'll be a multi woman match to determine the new champ. So just make it a 5 way (or 6 way) elimination.

Loved how they had Baszler just kick the shit out of her, but then Kairi weakened the ribs and just focused on them. Complete Old-school story telling in the match.
I cracked up at the end when Trips raised Kairi's hand up and you saw that she is so short that she would barely be able to touch the top of his(or Steph's) head if she wanted to.

When the camera panned to Rousey/Horsewomen, and JR says there's some fans enjoying the match...or every time Kairi comes out "She's a yachtsman!"

Rhea Ripley is the 2nd entrant.
She's been in NXT for the past year and was in it last year. She's been working house shows and looks real good.

Tournament starts taping tonight. It will air September 5th after NXT Michael Cole, Beth Phoenix & Renee Young on the call
Happy for Renee. Maybe this is a trial run into something potentially bigger? Beth improved over the course of the MMC as well. Cole is there to be the annoying robot to plug WWE stuff, despite this whole thing being on their Network.
Wish it was Mauro, but happy Renee is there.
I won't post spoilers for the tournament, they'll be out there if you want to look them up. I'm going to avoid it and might do little reviews for matches like I do the G1.

I must've completely missed you posting that Cathy pic, Drop In. That's absolutely delightful!
What I was coming to post was Bracketology is tonight on the Network. Tournament starts a week from today.
I've managed to avoid spoilers, which is a miracle. So I'll do write ups on the matches G1 style like I said.
Actually really looking forward to this tournament.

Reminder this starts tonight after NXT. I like that they're doing one episode a week and not putting the entire tournament up like last year.
Episode 1 Rhea Ripley vs MJ Jenkins Lacey Lane vs Vanessa Kraven Tegan Nox vs Zetara Meiko Satomura vs Killer Kelly
|
|
|
Post by randomone on Sept 5, 2018 21:23:08 GMT -6
Episode 1 Tegan Nox vs Zatara is our opener. Tegan took control early showing off her speed doing that Mysterio fake out 619 deal where she faked a dive. Zatara took over & targeted the leg Nox had surgery on last year. Nox sold the leg well, as Zatara cut off her offense with a missile dropkick & double knees to the corner. Zatara missed a move and Nox hit a Shining Wizard out of nowhere for the pin. Don't like that she used the bad leg to hit it. Just an ok opener. Nox didn't get to show off much.
Rhea Ripley vs MJ Jenkins is next. Rhea is hot & got a lot more jacked from last year's MYC. Cole mentioned multiple times that she looks like Charlotte (I don't see it honestly). MJ sold for most of this until she finally hulked up and hit a springboard dropkick. Ripley cut her off soon after and hit a pumphandle powerbomb for the win. Rhea is still super green, but you can tell she's got the it factor.
Lacey Lane vs Vanessa Kraven up next. Kraven towers over Lane. Lacey botched a springboard arm drag off the ropes (why leave that in? Edit it out). Kraven used her power to take control. Cannonball in the corner by Kraven who lights Lane up with chops. Canadian backbreaker by Kraven (MICHAEL COLE JUST MADE AN IRON MIKE SHARPE REFERENCE?!?!?!) then a weird spinning Black Hole Slam that soon followed. Lane avoided another cannonball and hit a crucifix bomb for the upset. This was a match to put over Lane's heart despite her inexperience.
Meiko Satomura vs Killer Kelly is the main event. Exchange of submissions to start & a series of reversals lead to Kelly taking control after a stiff bicycle kick. Meiko with an arm drag into a half crab into an STF which was crazy awesome. 2 minutes in and this has been better than any of the other 3 matches tonight. Stiff kicks to the chest by Meiko who is lighting her up until Kelly nails a suplex. Kelly misses another bicycle kick and Meiko nails a cartwheel into a double knee. Kelly cut Meiko off at the top & locks in a dragon sleeper off the ropes. Stalling dropkick to the corner and Fisherman's Suplex but only gets a 2! Kelly looks for a German but Meiko hits a Pele Kick then hits a DVD for the win. Excellent main event.
Obviously the main event was the best match of the night. Meiko is a force to be reckoned with. Rhea is going to be a player down the line. Lacey is a good underdog. And Tegan is great but she didn't get a chance to do much in her match. Commentary is fine, Cole is whatever, Beth has gotten much better since the Mixed Match Challenge deal and Renee is always great.

Episode 2 Deonna Purrazzo vs Priscilla Kelly kicks us off. This was just an ok albeit short match. Deonna showed off her speed early, but Priscilla cut her off soon after. Crowd was very quiet for a majority of this one. Deonna won via armbar. Wish this match would've gone longer, as neither got to show off much. They deserved more time.
Aerial Monroe vs Zeuxis is second. We see Cedric Alexander front row for his wife Aerial. Sloppy start but Monroe has some serious charisma. She is super green (no pun intended because her hair is green) but has a ton of potential. Zeuxis took control and was super slow with her offense until Monroe fought back with an uppercut. She hit a sliding Flatliner which was cool. Zeuxis won via Flux Capacitor off the top, which came out of nowhere. Aside from the finish, I wasn't overly impressed with Zeuxis, but Monroe hopefully comes back. They cut to Cedric & his child, who was crying that Ariel lost (what a great camera cut).
Kacy Catanzaro vs Reina Gonzales was third. This was the female version of Nash vs Mysterio. Reina towered over Kacy as she ragdolled her early. Kacy showed off her American Ninja Warrior moves in her offense. Michael Cole is insufferable on commentary in this match. Reina took most of this one obviously as Kacy is a natural underdog due to her size. Crowd was fully behind Kacy as she sold really well for being a rookie. Kacy finally got Reina down with a cool springboard dropkick & she scored the upset with a victory roll. Kacy is going to be really good.
Ashley Rayne vs Mercedes Martinez is our main event. It is amazing Madison Rayne has never wrestled once in WWE prior to this. Really good back & forth mat wrestling to start. Mercedes planted Rayne with a Crunchy variation early. Commentary did mention Rayne's husband "Josh" but never mentioned it was Josh Mathews. Mercedes blocked a Tornado DDT attempt into a stalling vertical suplex, looked for another but Rayne hit a cutter. Sliding lariats by Rayne for a near fall, but Mercedes answered with a spinebuster. Rayne regains control with a guillotine legdrop for a near fall of her own (Cole made a Mercedes just got tattooed pun that gave me douche chills). Mercedes planted Rayne with a fishermans buster to get the win. Very good main event. Wish Rayne would stick around longer, she's great.
Fun second episode. Commentary was much more robotic this time. Cole was fucking awful. The girls seemed to just hit bullet points the whole time too. Opener was way too short. Second was ok. Third was visually cool. And the main event was really solid.

Episode 3 Kaitlyn vs Kavita Devi is up first. Cole pointed out how he humiliated Kaitlyn and the girls on NXT season 3 but they've come a long way since. Yeah they've come a long way from you being a dick, Cole. Kaitlyn got "you still got it chants" despite being 31 years old. Only things worth noting here is Kaitlyn hit a cannonball in the corner and a spear for the win. She hit 3 leg drops in succession which Cole said she was "chopping Devi down" HOW DO YOU CHOP SOMEONE DOWN WITH LEGDROPS?? Anyways this was a kinda sloppy match. Devi is still learning, so that's fine and Kaitlyn looked ok for not being on TV for 4 years.
Toni Storm vs Jinny is next. Toni is damn delightful, she's my pick to win this. Storm started hot, but Jinny cut her off with a Flatliner in the corner. Cole is too over the top after every move in this one. Jinny hit an arm drag sending Storm in the corner and took her face off with a forearm. Jinny locked in a surfboard but Toni made a comeback with a snap German suplex then the Storm Zero for the win. Good match.
Xia Li vs Karen Q was third and both women are martial artists so we get both bowing & some back and forth Mortal Kombat style which the crowd loved. Q slapped Li in the face, running boot and exploder suplex for a near fall. Li tried to fight back but ate a full nelson suplex. Cravat by Q but Li got out with stiff kicks ending with a roundhouse to the face. Jawbreaker by Q who goes to the top but missed a frog splash. Li hit a spinning axe kick (like Will Ospreay) for the win. Similar look & style made this quick match pretty enjoyable.
Mia Yim vs Alisyn Kay is our main event. Battle of the former TNA Knockout Champions. Mia punted Kay in the chest from the apron, but Kay answered with a Pounce (shout out to Monty Brown! Mia with a suicide dive and tried to chop Kay against the post but missed and cracked her hand loud. Kay took over inside and fishhooked her with her pinky (pinkys up!) Mia tried to lock in a submission out of desperation but Kay quickly cut her off.
Anything Mia would throw Kay shrugged off until we got a face off in the middle with both trading shots with Mia slapping the fuck out of Kay, who answered back with a bicycle kick. Both struggle to get up as Mia hits 3 dropkicks and a missile from the second. Mia missed a package piledriver & Kay tried for a Widows Peak, but Mia countered into a Code Red for 2. Kay hit her Big D spinning lariat for 2 as both got up and hit kicks to the head at the same time. Mia was able to hit a Sole Food off the second for the win!
Main event was the best match of the tournament thus far. So check that out. Final 4 first round matches are next week.

Episode 4 Hiroyo Matsumoto vs Rachel Evers was the opener. Matsumoto fucking obliterated Rachel with a dropkick off the top early. Crowd booed Matsumoto at times (Renee said she was feeling the love, which made Renee sound dumb) and was behind Evers who fought back with a spinebuster (which Cole called a powerbomb). We get an exchange of forearms, which ended in Evers hitting a bicycle kick, cutter and running senton for a near fall. Evers with a STO and spinning legdrop out of the corner for another 2. Matsumoto hits a snap German, but Rachel no sells and gets up! Evers eats a lariat and gets hit with a powerbomb, then planted with a Saito suplex for the win. This was a great match, arguably the best of the tournament thus far. Rachel looked fantastic, to say she looked better than last year is a huge understatement.
Taynara Conti vs Jessie Elaban is next. Elaban is a rookie from the PC who I'd describe as a mix between AJ Lee & Bayley. And Taynara has been on NXT before (and looks like the love child of Renee & Natalya). Taynara with judo throws to start, Jessie counters with kicks, but she misses a splash and Conti regains control with a sloppy take down. Crowd is pretty dead as Taynara has a wrist hold. This match is very clunky as Jessie took control briefly but Conti hit a spinning Judo throw into a side slam for the win. This was the worst match of the first round.
Nicole Matthews vs Isla Dawn up next. We're told about Isla's acting career (Cole with the WHO GIVES A SHIT tidbit that Isla has acted in a horror movie, despite being scared by those kind of movies). Nicole with a hangmans neck breaker out of the corner & punts Isla in the back. She controlled a majority of this as Isla would fire back briefly until getting cut off. (Beth points out a win tonight could launch their careers, despite, you know, Matthews being a 12 year veteran). Isla damn near murdered Nicole with a sloppy Angle Slam for 2. Nicole with a clothesline as she locks in a Lion Tamer for the submission win. Sloppy at times but it was an ok match. Crowd was totally dead as I don't think they knew who was a heel or face.
Io Shirai vs Xia Brookside is the final first round match. Xia is 19 and the daughter of Robbie Brookside. He's front row and it's said he's never seen his daughter wrestle. Xia charges with offense immediately, hits a head scissors but Io lands on her feet. Stiff forearms and a leaping double knee to the corner by Shirai for two as she drags Xia down with a crossface. Xia rolls through, but is leveled with a knee to the face. Shirai looks for a underhook but Xia with a jawbreaker and facebuster. Xia charges but eats a palm strike then Io demolished her with a Meteora in the corner and murdered poor Xia with a moonsault for the win. This match was fast paced but only went 3 minutes. Wish Xia had a chance to shine more, but I understand why, this was a showcase for Shirai.
Sweet 16 starts next week. We aren't told who we'll see though.
