Well, I cracked and succumbed to the familial pressure and we are getting a dog. I wanted a Bernese Mountain Dog but my wife didn't want shedding and wanted something hypo-allergenic... ergo the Bernedoodle. My wife and kids are freaking out excited and we get him on Saturday. Of all weekends I will be out of town so they get to deal with the first couple days solo and learn that having a puppy isn't all playing and cuddling. I give it 3 months before the kids realize "hey this is work!" and I inherit all the chores that go with dog ownership. But that's not why I called... any solid training advice from the board dog owners? I really don't want to pay someone to do it but my wife is practically insisting. I'll hang up and listen for my ain'tswer...

Pay someone and listen to all of their advice. The rest is up to you. If you tolerate anything, it becomes the way. NO human food. They will stop begging. Acknowledge positive things like peeing or pooing in the appropriate spot. Similar to your experience with DougRef. Apple spray and Pepper work well in areas they aren't supposed to do things. Absolutely no hitting. Although I don't think that needed to be said. Keep a proper food schedule and rub behind the ear. The dog will treat you like their God.
We missed out on the proper training with Tenay. I'd definitely suggest it.

Good to know - but I still don't want to pay someone Already spent too much to get this dog from a breeder and I am trying to be the sensible one. Imagine that! Me! The sensible one!

How much is it generally to have someone train your dog?

My fiancee and I are moving in together in October. She was insistent that we get a pup. It was such a pain in the ass finding an apartment that's dog friendly.
But's that's not why you called. You must must must must train when the dog is a puppy. Needs to have those habits drilled into it's dog brain. Otherwise it'll just say FU later when it's an adult and acts like Terry Boers. It'll know better but just think "fuck it I'm still welcome in this house and get belly rubs even though I act like an asshole."

Tenay is a good dog, but we missed out on puppy training time because he was so sick. It took four times as long to train him and there are still behaviors that would have been hashed out early if we had the opportunity.

We're huge dog lovers. We have weimaraners. They check several boxes for us- almost no shedding, good sized (about 70 lbs.), very fun and family oriented, and they are beautiful. Yes, get that training in early. We have been "bad" owners in that we aren't consistent in our training among the four of us, and the dogs pull when you walk them and jump up on people.
Good luck with the puppy. They are tons of work but incredibly rewarding.

My fiancee's family GSP has the exact same issue with pulling on the leash when walking. He's luckily gotten better but there are walks where he 100% is dictating the walk and it's a battle the whole time.
We have to be paying attention all the time during a walk as he has the same issue too with jumping on joggers passing by. He just wants to say hello but obviously the jogger doesn't know that, lol

That's a big early training issue. You walk the dog, not the other way around. When I see dogs dragging their owners around, I get that judgmental liberal face.
Consistency is the other key. Anyone living in the house, or visitors, need to play by the same rules. Otherwise it's chaos. If one person gives the dog human food, it doesn't matter what ten other people do. It will always think there's a chance for snacks during dinner.

Drop, we failed because we were not consistent. We know that and are bad owners because of it. We even had lessons, but we just didn't follow through.

My first house out of college ended up with three couples living in it. One couple got a puppy. Seemed like a great idea because we all loved dogs. But it was a GD mess. The couple that got the dog ended up staying when the rest of us left. I got a call two days after moving out from my friend's now wife. "Can you come over and get Butkus inside? I hate saying this, but I think you're the only one that he'll listen to right now." I had to literally wrestle him inside the house. Everyone had the best of intentions, but the message was so different he ended up being a really bad dog. Experience is a brutal but outstanding teacher.

Week 3 of puppy ownership. WTF this is worse than another kid. He bites and nips constantly and hates being on a leash. Also eats every goddamn piece of wood he sees whether its mulch, or a stick, or a 2x4, or even a goddamn tree. He is crazy. My oldest is already done with him - says she hates picking up poop and doesn't want to take him for walks because he just bites his leash and lays down refusing to move. I am the one that has to come home at lunch every day and let him out and also get home early enough to let him out so he doesn't piss his cage.
How did I get talked into this again??

I'll start with the last issue to start. They won't normally piss the crate unless they REALLY have to piss. There aren't any pads in there, right? Just blankets, water, etc?

Right no pads - just his chew toys and a blanket. I just feel bad leaving him in there all day. That sucks for any animal let alone a puppy. I told my wife though she had to find someone to come let him out and stay with him for an hour around lunch as I can't always make it home to do that.

Crate training is great for discipline but will also lead to a puppy being shot out of a cannon after sleeping all day. When does the pro training start?

Jack, it sounds minor but prioritize getting rid of the blanket habit. My fiancee's dog LOVES to play tug of war with blankets. He oddly knows the rules to not fuck with bedroom/bed blankets. But he refuses to stop fucking with other blankets. He has slowly ruined a ton of micro fleece blankets that are used in the living room during watching TV and such.
One morning I had a blanket over my lap and was playing N64. He ran up to me and grabbed the blanket. Unfortunately he bit a little too much and nipped my dick. Motherfucker scraped me just enough to break skin. Putting cleaning alcohol on your dick to kill bacteria DOES NOT feel good.

Do the pro training route. Both of you. The dog will know which blankets to fuck with..........
Which is also a new Kirkwood single. "These ain't the blankets to fuck wit"
