Jack Perry joined House of Torture.
That tracks.

They brought back Pieter for the first time in ages, only for Yujiro to lose in 3 minutes to Yano
Yoshi beat Kenta for the first time in his career, it was fine.
Perry vs Shota was a solid showing for Perry since it was his first match since All In London. Him joining HOT fucking sucks, but at least this means he’ll be in New Japan for a while. If you’re going to get heat, I understand joining a faction. But HOT is go away heat and I’m one of the few here who actually like Perry
Anyways, Perry vs Yano in the next round, so we know what’s happening there.
Not a strong start to the New Japan Cup

A shirtless Chase Owens pinning Ishii clean in the opening round is where we’re at in New Japan booking right now.
How do you follow that up? Multiple rest holds with Tanga Loa beating Great O-Khan in a snoozer.
Thankfully Finlay beating TJP in the finals was a good match, but Finlay has lost a lot of aura after starting the year strong, but dropping his title to Nemeth immediately.
Rough first two nights to the NJ Cup

Jungle Boy bumped his ass off for Yano in their second round match this morning. Still turned into your usual HOT bullshit and Perry won.
SANADA beat YOSHI-HASHI in a boring main event to advance as well
SANADA vs Perry in a rematch from Forbidden Door in the next round

Finlay beat Tanga Loa Goto over Chase Owens (in the main event)
This first round is thankfully over. It’s been a brutal stretch so far. Maybe 2 good matches out of the bunch?

EVIL over Hikuleo with your standard interference filled HOT shit
Shingo over Kidd in the Match of the Tournament so far (which I realize isn’t saying much, but this was friggin excellent)

God bless you for putting up with this.
Man it sounds awful.

I only watch the tournament matches, so none of the multi man nothing matches.
Hopefully it turns around because this is on track (even with the Shingo/Kidd match) for being the worst NJ Cup on record.
They're leaning so heavily on the House of Torture stuff that it exposes Gedo's weakness as booker, especially now with Okada/Ospreay/Tama gone, as you can't just throw a crazy great match at the end and people forget about the HOT trash that happens multiple times a show.

Tsuji over ELP in a really great match. Tsuji is my pick to win this thing
I say that because Narita upset Sabre in a match that was very good technical, counters and then it was ruined in the last 2 minutes by run ins and ref distractions. Pipe shot by Narita and X Factor gave him the win.
So it’s down to… SANADA vs Jack Perry Hirooki Goto vs David Finlay EVIL vs Shingo Takagi Yota Tsuji vs Ren Narita

Finlay out due to illness, so Goto gets a bye into the semis.

And that was supposed to be the main event too. SANADA overcame the HOT bullshit to pin Jungle Boy off an O’Connor Roll to advance.
Again, the match was good, but the same interference/ref bump stuff that’s happened for years (and literally at least 7 times this tournament alone) it takes the air out of everything.
SANADA vs Goto in the semis

Tsuji beat Narita for the first time in his career to advance. HOT/LIJ brawling and bullshit led to the flash pin finish. The brawling led into the second quarter final
EVIL beat Shingo with the same ref bump/interference we literally just saw.
Semis are… SANADA vs Goto Tsuji vs EVIL

Total of 4 refs in the Evil vs Tsuji match and just as many run ins. Tsuji weathered the storm to advance to the finals.
Goto defeated SANADA in the other semi in a really good match. They played off Goto’s history of winning the cup 3 times in the past.
So it’s Goto vs Tsuji in the finals. Still going with Tsuji.

Tsuji beat Goto to win the NJ Cup and gets the title shot against Naito at Genesis in a few weeks.
Great main event to an otherwise really shitty tournament. Minus maybe 4 matches.
Now is the time, strap a rocket to Tsuji & Umino and get your new era of New Japan going

They should make Jack Perry the 4th pillar.

They should make Jack Perry the 4th pillar. If anyone questions whether Tony is mad at Jungle Boy, look no further having him go to New Japan and getting Gedo to put him in House of Torture.

Gabe Kidd officially re-signed with NJPW
Thankfully. Now push the War Dogs instead of House of Torture!

Well, shit. Coughlin has apparently retired. Hope it’s a work, but if not, that’s a bummer. I enjoyed his work (and facial expressions especially)

March 31st, Tanga Loa vs Great O-Khan in the KOPW Title match under Rural Revitalization Rules (72% of the fan vote)
Round 1: 10 minute most covers match, every cover attempt = 1 point
Round 2: 5 minute eel eating contest
Round 3: Strap Match, all four corners must be touched to win
Say what you want about how boring New Japan has become, you simply can’t say that about the KOPW Title. It’s fucking batshit crazy.
The only way to watch this is in person, but “thanks to the personal request of the Great O Khan”, this match will be shown “at a later date”

Naito beat Tsuji to retain the title, lame
I know they had already announced Naito vs Moxley for the Windy City Riot show (and that’ll be for the title), but I really had hoped Tsuji would win the title and a much needed new era in NJPW begins

Uemura vs O-Khan set for the KOPW Title in Hiroshima. Fans get to vote on the stips. Either
2/3 Falls of catch wrestling - Uemura’s choice or 1st fall Tire Carrying contest, 2nd fall Lemon eating contest, 3rd fall Tables match - O-Khan’s choice
Again, the KOPW Title continues to be the most batshit crazy title in wrestling. It’s dumb and they fully lean into it.

Finlay won the Global Title from Ziggler Kenta & Owens won the tag titles back from Bishamon in a snoozer Moxley retained over Narita in your standard overbooked House of Torture match
