I think it would work better if he did their morning drive but where he is at in his life and career I can certainly see the benefits of doing the afternoon drive vs the morning.

I don't know about the ratings, but The Drive would be the most likely FM destination for a Drop In in Chicago. Once again, I'm not a big Mac guy. But I think this could work. Ok, well ONE person would. But seriously, I hope this works out for all. Anything that keeps him off the sports talker realm of the radio makes me very happy. I like the idea of good programming. It doesn't matter if I like it. I'll find something. We need something that's different and innovative. Could Mac be the guy to do it? Meh.

In all honesty, it's probably great for him. He's long since burned out on sports. Gonna be a strange audience though as you alluded to. Gonna be interesting gaining sports talk listeners while still primarily (I assume) playing music. But then it's gonna be equally interesting to see if music listeners stay if he gets too yappy. Will be a delicate balance.

What this really means is that the score has taken a substantial hit. That midday show is going to be garbage....not hamp and holmes garbage but only a smidge better. With Mac and Kap both not in play for that slot.....who the hell is there? There is no one AT ALL being groomed to be on air full time. Terry is leaving too sooner than later. It blows my mind how there is no one in the radio minor leagues ready to go.

Or influence them to not wear pants. Maybe somewhere in the middle.

Anybody following my awesome Twitter account would've known yesterday - or maybe it was the day before - that Mackeyfish is going to The Drive. This is wonderful news as there's no way I could even accidentally stumble across him. Told ya!! Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for “The McMorning Show.” Veteran Chicago radio personalities Dan McNeil and Pete McMurray are about to team up as morning co-hosts on Hubbard Radio classic hits WDRV FM 97.1, sources said. If all goes as planned, the duo will succeed Steve Downes, who announced Friday he was retiring after 14 years at The Drive. Downes agreed to continue hosting the show, which airs from 5 to 10 a.m. weekdays, until his replacement is named. McNeil, who has spent his entire 30-year Chicago radio career in the sports/talk genre, last week turned down an offer to reclaim his former job as midday personality on CBS Radio sports/talk WSCR AM 670. “It’s true the Score and I didn’t reach an agreement and I remain a free agent,” he told fans on Facebook. “To those of you who are disappointed, I assure you I’m not finished world shakin’ yet. You will get ample notice where you can find me.” More surprising than McNeil’s move to The Drive is that of McMurray, whose star has been on the rise at Tribune Media news/talk WGN AM 720. The Peoria native has been busy in Chicago ever since he joined the former WCKG in 1998. Following two stints on WCKG, two on WLUP FM 97.9, and two on WKQX FM 101.1, McMurray landed at WGN as late-night host in September 2013 and was promoted to evenings five months later. McMurray told WGN bosses Tuesday that he was leaving to accept an offer from The Drive. Greg Solk, senior vice president of programming for Hubbard Radio, declined to comment Tuesday. But the pairing of the mercurial, opinionated McNeil with the steady and affable McMurray bears the trademark of Solk, a shrewd programmer who has worked with both personalities in the past. While capitalizing on the popularity of the two characters, the move appears aimed at strengthening The Drive’s appeal to its target audience of men between 25 and 54. In the latest Nielsen Audio survey, mornings on The Drive tied for eight place overall with a 2.9 percent share and cumulative weekly audience of 341,400. Among men 25-54, mornings tied for ninth place with a 3.4 share and weekly cume of 133,900. www.robertfeder.com/2015/02/10/mcneil-mcmurray-to-host-mcmornings-on-the-drive/

Funny that the Drive targets 25-54. 54 is about the age I stopped listening to the Drive even rarely. At some age, maybe it is 54, we just can't handle even one more listen to "Radar Love", "Riders on the Storm" or Rockin Rod and "Maggie Mae".
It is also funny that radio stations don't care about men older than 54...even though the older one gets, the more money you have to buy advertisers' stuff.

Maybe 40. Once you've heard Blinded By The Light for the 957th time..... I really can't do music on the radio. Heard it all. Or at least the stuff I like to listen to. I need to be in a certain mood for it now. I think when things like Limewire were around back in the day, and people were downloading thousands of songs, it just got a lot easier to listen to what you wanted, when you wanted. And now with countless devices available, I can't imagine being held hostage by a random music station playing random songs that I may or may not like......even if I was in the mood for music that day which is rare.

So yeah, Eurythmics and Roxette are acceptable to an extent. Rozette much more than Eurythmics. Hey look, I can get down to the Bangles if need be.

The numbers in the article also show the local terrestrial radio biz is not a great biz model any more. Drive mornings have a 133k weekly cume. That means a total of about 27k people listen every morning. For an advertiser, the CPM (cost per thousand inpressions) is much better for tv, online, sirius xm and social media than it is for terr. radio. If an advertiser wants to supplement their strategy with some radio for a target demo, ok. Or if a product has a really narrow market (like strip clubs or douche bags) then an advertiser might buy a sports radio station or the Oprah channel. But even then, the cpm isn't great.
I just had five agencies pitch me for a $5 million campaign we are going to run. Not one included any terr. radio. It probably isn't going away anytime soon, but it is not a growth industry. I guess joining a declining industry fits for guys with declining careers. And that is not a shot at Mac. Just a fact.

I wonder if this is gonna be like a Bob & Brian type show. I'm not even sure if they still have that show as I used to listen to it like 20 years ago. But it was pretty much sports and rock and roll. I want to say that Dan Patrick used to call in on a regular basis.
