Meltzer giving Hogan-Andre negative stars is still ridiculous though. Does he even do that shit anymore? If not, seems like a way to maybe reset things. We all agree there have been just as shitty matches now as there were 30 years ago. See Nia Jax. Looked it up, he’s given negatives to New Japan matches over the past few years. Mainly House of Torture bullshit ones, which no one likes but Gedo it seems. As for WWE, the last 3 I could find were Vince vs Pat McAfee from Mania as -2 stars. Damien Priest vs Miz - Zombie Lumberjack Match was -3 Orton vs Bray - Mania with the Bliss Black Ooze was -1

Yea, randomone I can’t disagree with that. I’d probably have it as a 2 star rating based on Meltzer’s old scale but I’d need to watch it again. To go from negative 4 and change it to one star is awfully peculiar. That’s a 5 star rating change in his thought process? Doesn’t pass the smell test and makes him look like an asshole.

I mean it’s all subjective, people just dissect Dave’s ratings because of how long he’s been doing this. We all have our scales on what we think should or shouldn’t be high/low.
Cairo said he would rank Owen/Bret from Mania 10 at the top of his list. I love that match, but I’d put their Cage Match from Summerslam above Mania. My opinion, my scale. Cairo isn’t wrong, we just differ on opinion.
For Mania 3, if I were going to show someone a match from the card on what caters to ME as a wrestling fan, I’d show them Savage/Steamboat. But if I know the person is more about the razzmatazz flashy theatrics, I’d go Hogan/Andre, even though that IC Title had some crazy great storytelling.

It’s not about his actual ratings. It’s about how he has let his own personal relationships (or lack thereof) highly - extremely - influence his ratings to the point of looking like a jackass when he tries to position himself as a neutral journalist on something, not a primetime Fox opinion talking head figure.. -4 was because he was butthurt about something. I think we can all agree Pat vs Vince deserved as much of a negative rating as possible.
There’s another universe out there where you were born earlier and are in Meltzer’s seat giving out star ratings from WM1 to present day. I may not always agree with that randomone rating (it’s subjective to a point) but I can trust his reasoning and appreciate his consistency.

Dave's problem is he vacillates on how his ratings work.
Sometimes "it's just one mans opinion", while others he rates not based on whether he likes a match or not but on how the crowd and others receive it.
He's a mark for himself a little bit as well.

I know Dave’s theory is the caliber of matches now are so above where they used to be that if you compared many matches he gave say 4 stars to back then, it’d probably be 3.5-3.75 stars today. I know that will (and does) annoy long time fans, but you can’t deny that the quality of matches in WWE/AEW/NJPW etc really outshine those of a previous generation. Not ALL of them by any stretch, but many. For what it’s worth, the Taker/Angle match I’d give 4.5 IMO. Dave forgot what star power, long-term booking, character building and storytelling within a match does for fans and how that affects the rating of a match. I absolutely can deny that the quality is better today in similarly rated matches, and those he rates higher. It hit me over the weekend what happened to Dave. He understood how great the movie Halloween was decades ago and rated it four stars - for basically all the things I mentioned. Turn to present day, and we come to find out Dave is a mark for the Terrifer movies, slasher films with instant gratification, little logic at time and missing the traits I mentioned. He’s a sucker for the moves (or kills), no matter how fake they look and then rates those movies 5.5 stars. Chris Jericho is in Terrifier 2. My analogy comes full circle.

I think Dave is just trolling at this point.
